The Sterile Processing Department at Corewell Health offers a fast-paced work environment. New team members will undergo a 90-day orientation, which includes an SPD 101 class taught by educators covering standard work and regulations, along with guidance from a preceptor. Technicians are responsible for assembling case carts with sterile instrumentation according to surgery schedules, transporting them to the OR, and placing them in designated areas. Depending on the Grand Rapids hire site, departments can anticipate handling 40-90 surgical cases. Team members are expected to wear surgical attire in the department. The first 6 weeks of the 90-day course are mandatory 1st shift (0700-1530, Monday-Friday), after which the team member will transition to their hired shift times for the remainder of orientation. Sterile Processing professionals are vital contributors to safe, high-quality patient care, responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, sterilizing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. Their work follows a specific processing cycle: Decontam > Inspect > Assembly > Package > Sterilize > Inspect > Store > Inspect > Dispense. At each step, items are inspected to ensure they are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. Sterile Processing Techs are also involved in record keeping and tracking processes across many different functions of their jobs, ensuring properly processed products are available when needed, with the patient as the center of every quality concern.
