The sterile processing tech is responsible for cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, and storing supplies, instruments, and equipment. This role adheres to sterilization process policies and procedures, cleans each item according to manufacturers’ instructions, and inspects instruments under a microscope for damage and defects, lubricating items as required. The technician determines that each item is in good working condition, sorts and arranges items into proper trays, and wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure. Accurate labeling with name and expiration date is crucial. The role involves correctly operating sterilizers, ultrasonic washers, and other processing equipment, positioning items correctly in the sterilizer, and selecting the proper cycle, seeking assistance when needed. Checking indicators for proper functioning and performing required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers are key responsibilities. The technician maintains the availability of supplies for continuity of the sterilization process, cleans sterilizers according to policies, and maintains inventory levels and accurate records. This includes performing weekly inspections of all sterile items in the facility, checking for outdated items and package integrity, and replacing items as necessary. Placing items in the correct location, maintaining adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area, and maintaining/updating the instrument tray inventory list are also part of the role. The technician will maintain current information regarding routine preference cards and accurately document the count of items sent to and returned by laundry.
