About The Position

The Sterile Processing Department at Corewell Health is a fast-paced work environment. New team members undergo a mandatory 90-day orientation, which includes a 6-week SPD 101 class (0700-1530, Monday-Friday) covering standard work and regulations, along with guidance from a preceptor. After this initial period, team members transition to their hired shift times. Technicians are responsible for assembling case carts with sterile instrumentation based on surgery schedules, then transporting them to the Operating Room. Depending on the Grand Rapids site, departments handle between 40-90 surgical cases daily. Surgical attire is required in the department. Sterile Processing professionals are crucial contributors to safe, high-quality patient care, responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, sterilizing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. Their work follows a detailed processing cycle: Decontamination > Inspection > Assembly > Packaging > Sterilization > Inspection > Storage > Inspection > Dispensing. At each stage, items are meticulously inspected for cleanliness, good repair, correct assembly, and proper processing. Sterile Processing Techs also manage record keeping and tracking to ensure that all processed products are available precisely when needed, always prioritizing patient well-being.
