Sterile Processing Technicians clean, decontaminate, sterilize, inspect, assemble, package, store, track, and distribute medical and surgical instrumentation to support safe, high-quality patient care. They follow the processing cycle and inspect items at each stage to ensure they are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. They maintain records and tracking information and ensure properly processed products are available when needed. The department is fast-paced. Technicians assemble case carts according to surgery schedules, including the sterile instruments needed for each procedure, then transport completed carts to the operating room and place them in the designated area. Depending on the Grand Rapids work site, departments may handle approximately 40–90 surgical cases. Team members wear surgical attire. New team members complete a 90-day orientation, including an SPD 101 class on department standards and regulations and support from a preceptor. They must also complete a Sterile Processing educational training course. The first six weeks of the course are on first shift, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; after that, the team member transitions to their hired shift for the remainder of orientation.
