The Sterile Processing Tech works in a fast-paced department and is responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, sterilizing, and distributing medical and surgical instruments. The role follows the processing cycle of decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and dispensing, with inspections throughout to ensure instruments are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. Technicians maintain records and tracking across job functions and provide properly processed products when needed, keeping patient safety at the center of quality concerns. Technicians assemble case carts according to surgery schedules, including the sterile instruments needed for each procedure, then transport completed carts to the OR and place them in the designated area. The department handles approximately 40–90 surgical cases depending on the Grand Rapids site. Team members wear surgical attire. New hires complete a 90-day orientation with an SPD 101 class and a preceptor. The first six weeks of the required educational training course are on first shift, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; afterward, the team member transitions to their hired shift for the remainder of orientation.
