About The Position

The Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of instruments and equipment. This role ensures that all items processed meet the highest standards of sterility to prevent cross-contamination and ensure patient safety. The position involves working with various sterilization equipment and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. Additionally, the tech will manage inventory, distribute supplies, and handle crash carts for emergency situations. Participation in quality improvement initiatives and potentially precepting new employees are also part of the role.

Requirements

High school education or equivalent.
Ability to Communicate and Follow Directions
Good Human Relations Skills
Basic computer knowledge skills
Central Service Tech Certification Obtained within 12 Months Upon Hire

Nice To Haves

1 year experience preferred, but not required.
Certified Central Service Tech preferred, but not required.
Current Employees to Obtain Certification Within 12 Months as of July 1st, 2013

Responsibilities

Decontamination of Instruments and Equipment: Ensuring soiled instrumentation and equipment are decontaminated properly to prevent cross-contamination, wearing proper protective attire, following established procedures, collecting and transporting soiled equipment, setting up and ensuring proper function of decontamination equipment, maintaining a clean work area, reporting equipment malfunctions, and handling infectious waste according to hospital procedure.
Performance of Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping: Assembling surgical items, instrument sets, and floor trays; examining instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly; ensuring correct instrument count and placement; completing count sheets; and packaging/wrapping items for sterilization.
Performance of all equipment in Sterile Processing: Utilizing appropriate sterilization processes, using test packs to monitor sterilizer function, assessing and interpreting sterilizer operation data, labeling processed items, positioning items for sterilization, documenting processed items, reviewing and documenting test pack results, and reporting malfunctions immediately.
Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions: Maintaining inventory and appropriate storage of sterile items, receiving supplies, completing case carts for the Operating Room, cleaning storage areas, placing sterile items for distribution, rotating stock using first-in/first-out method, answering the telephone courteously, and completing paperwork for supply requisitions.
Exchange and Delivery of Code Blue case carts: Processing crash carts to ensure completeness and operational readiness, cleaning carts, examining inventory, checking packaging integrity of sterile items, checking operation of specific equipment on the cart, and following established procedures for crash cart exchange.
Participates in the Department related to quality improvement: Monitoring quality assurance indicators, assisting in policy and procedure revisions, and acting as a Preceptor for new employees.
