Sterile Processing professionals clean, decontaminate, sterilize, and distribute medical and surgical instrumentation to support safe, high-quality patient care. The work follows a processing cycle: decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, inspect, store, inspect, and dispense. Items are inspected throughout the cycle to ensure they are clean, in good repair, properly assembled, and correctly processed. The role also includes record keeping and tracking across multiple job functions and ensuring properly processed products are available when needed, with the patient at the center of quality concerns. Technicians assemble case carts according to surgery schedules, including the sterile instrumentation needed for each patient procedure. Completed carts are transported to the OR and placed in the designated area. Depending on the Grand Rapids hire site, departments may handle approximately 40–90 surgical cases. Team members wear surgical attire in the department. New team members complete a 90-day orientation, including an SPD 101 class on department standards and regulations and support from a preceptor. A Sterile Processing educational training course is required. Its first seven weeks are mandatory first shift, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; after that, team members transition to their hired shift for the remainder of orientation.
