The Sterile Processing Tech works in a fast-paced Sterile Processing Department and is responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, sterilizing, inspecting, assembling, storing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. The role follows a processing cycle: decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, inspection, storage, inspection, and dispensing. Items are checked at each stage to ensure they are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. Sterile Processing Techs also maintain records and track instruments across job functions, and provide properly processed products when needed, keeping patient safety at the center of quality concerns. Technicians assemble case carts according to surgery schedules, including the sterile instruments needed for each procedure. Completed carts are transported to the operating room and placed in a designated area. Depending on the Grand Rapids hire site, the department may support 40–90 surgical cases. Team members wear surgical attire in the department. New team members complete a 90-day orientation, including an SPD 101 class on departmental standards and regulations and preceptor support. A Sterile Processing educational training course is required. Its first seven weeks are mandatory on first shift, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; after the course, the team member transitions to their hired shift for the remainder of orientation.
