The Sterile Processing (SPD) Technician is responsible for the decontamination, disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. This role requires a thorough understanding of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals, and medical instruments to effectively clean, assemble, wrap, and sterilize equipment, supplies, and instruments. The technician must also demonstrate knowledge of equipment function to identify operational adequacy and distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunction. Adherence to applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards is crucial for performing all assignments within safety parameters. The role involves independently following cleaning checklists, initiating cleaning and restocking of work areas, and readily moving between decontamination and sterile processing areas. Communication with operating room staff, application of aseptic technique, and participation in inventory management are also key aspects of the position. Maintaining a clean and safe environment and staying knowledgeable about regulatory standards, including AAMI and ANSI, are essential. Collaboration with other disciplines to optimize patient outcomes and ensure a smooth surgical experience is expected. The technician is accountable for reporting occurrences and fostering the developmental and educational process of colleagues and students, potentially functioning as a preceptor. Participation in continuing education and skill development, including departmental requirements, is necessary. Additionally, the role involves assisting in managing controllable costs through the efficient use of resources.
