About The Position

The Sterile Processing Tech - SPD is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, wrapping, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment. This role ensures that all instruments and equipment are safe and ready for patient use. The position involves working with various sterilization equipment and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. Additionally, the role includes managing inventory, responding to requests, and processing crash carts for emergency situations. Participation in quality improvement initiatives and potentially precepting new employees is also part of the role.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Ability to Communicate and Follow Directions
  • Good Human Relations Skills
  • Basic computer knowledge skills
  • Heavy lifting: Lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Job responsibilities involve long periods of standing and walking.
  • Frequent contact with blood and body fluids.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situation with full motor function.
  • Strength and dexterity to handle sterilization equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to adjust work schedule when need arises (i.e., illness/vacation of other staff members).
  • Ability to work under time constraints in stressful situations.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year experience preferred, but not required.
  • Certified Central Service Tech preferred, but not required.
  • Current Employees to Obtain Certification Within 12 Months as of July 1st, 2013
  • Central Service Tech Certification Obtained within 12 Months Upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Decontamination of Instruments and Equipment: Ensuring soiled instrumentation or equipment is decontaminated properly to prevent cross-contamination, wearing proper protective attire, following established procedures, collecting soiled equipment, setting up decontamination equipment, maintaining a neat and clean work area, reporting improper equipment operation, cleaning and disinfecting equipment and work area, and handling infectious waste according to hospital procedure.
  • Performance of Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping: Professionally assembling surgical items, instrument sets, floor trays, and appropriate packaging for terminal sterilization, examining surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper function, assembling instrument sets with correct instruments and documenting contents, and following established procedures for packaging and wrapping items.
  • Performance of all equipment in Sterile Processing: Utilizing appropriate sterilization processes, using test packs to monitor sterilizer function daily, observing and assessing sterilizer operation, labeling processed items, positioning items for sterilization, documenting processed items, reviewing and documenting test pack results, and reporting malfunctions immediately.
  • Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions: Maintaining inventory and appropriate storage of sterile items, receiving supplies, completing case carts for the Operating Room, assisting with cleaning storage areas, placing sterile items for distribution, storing sterile items with inventory control, answering the telephone courteously, and completing paperwork accurately.
  • Exchange and Delivery of Code Blue case carts: Processing crash carts to ensure they are complete and operational, cleaning carts, examining inventory, checking packaging integrity of sterile items, checking operation of equipment on the cart, following established procedures for exchange of crash carts, and correctly assembling the intubation roll after use.
  • Participates in the Department related to quality improvement: Monitors quality assurance indicators, assists in revision of policies and procedures, and acts as Preceptor for new employees.
