About The Position

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Consult with SPD Team Leader regarding instrument issues. Sit in on candidate interviews for SPD Department and offer hiring recommendations. Collaborate with CQI Committee to develop and monitor policies and procedures to provide competent staff and the need for instruments per flashing log. Ensure instrumentation and supplies are in good working condition. Assume responsibility for keeping current with department organization trends and needs through active participation in activities designed to enhance skills, professional, and personal growth. Assist staff and providers with instrument issues. Assist in keeping/being a positive attitude within unit and between departments. Resource person to other staff. Work in collaboration with Team Leader for unit meeting agenda. Troubleshoot issues that occur on shift. Teach resources to staff; Share Drive: Instrument Counts, IFUs Communicate with vendors to ensure all equipment necessary is available for cases the next day. Flexible; available outside of working hours for phone calls. Provides backup coverage to SPD Team Leader when team leader is absent. Assist the Operating Room staff by providing instruments and supplies to perform the scheduled procedure. Works cooperatively with all staff throughout the facility. Follow approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies and procedures. Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains equipment. Works most of the time in the sterile processing department cleaning, preparing, assembling, and sterilizing instruments and sets. Assist with patient care as directed by the R.N. Help with the "turnover" of cases. Enter information into the logbooks regarding sterilizer operations. Adhere to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities. Reports observed or suspected safety violations, hazards and policy and procedure noncompliance to the Safety Officer or other designated person. Observes safety measures in performance of job duties and responsibilities. Responds to emergency situations with competence and composure. Demonstrates awareness of personal and work area safety all times Member of Safety Committee. Apply principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures to competently perform instrument technician functions. Follows principles of aseptic technique in preparing sterile packages and performing duties in preparation for the procedure. Adherence to hand washing requirements, workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological monitoring, and dress code. Reports any observed or suspected break in technique and takes appropriate action. Observes safety measures in patient care activities. Perform required maintenance of instruments, supplies and equipment by adhering to cleaning, care, utilization, and sterilization procedures as directed. Selects appropriate method of sterilization Communicate information about equipment to the appropriate staff. Wear personal protective equipment. Handle equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety. Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays during the procedure. Assist in maintaining adequate supplies in operating/procedure room for immediate access during procedure. Operate VPro equipment according to manufacturer guidelines. Inspect, disassemble, sort, clean and process reusable instrumentation and equipment. Follows manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing of instrumentations, equipment, and implants. Identify, inspect, and assemble all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser and endoscope instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations. Properly loads and unloads sterilizer Verifies that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of load. Assemble necessary supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to count sheets. Inspect equipment for proper working condition. Assist in work area by cleaning, storing packaging and sterilizing instruments. Maintain and updates instrument cards. Maintain standards to provide safe, clean and orderly environment. Other duties as assigned Quality Assurance Monitoring Check and validate event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records; inventory check sheets; and equipment monitoring. Verify sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of loads. Accurately document and maintain daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory guidelines and infection control standards. Maintain accurate sterilization records. Report all malfunctioning equipment to Team Leader. Clean and restock Sterile Processing Department. Participate in department employee orientation, meetings, in-services, training, and competency programs. Train personnel on: PPE, inspecting, disassembling, sorting, cleaning, and processing instrumentation and equipment. Selecting and operating specialized sterilization equipment. Follow device manufactures cleaning guidelines. Attend internal and external classes for growth and development. Professionalism: Demonstrate effective written and oral communication. Actively support and contributes teamwork in the workplace. Demonstrates responsibility in adhering to posted work schedule. Flexible work schedule to accommodate the surgical schedule. Assist in in-services and training. Performs other related duties as necessary

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Procedure room experience preferred
  • Experience in central processing functions related to facility equipment.
  • Experience or training in the disinfection/sterilization process required
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions.
  • Able to check all sterilization monitoring, record keeping, and quality assurance practices.
  • Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response.
  • Ability to move quickly in response to the operating room needs, to stand for long periods, occasional overhead and low reaching, and to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
