About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician III works directly with Surgery Clinical staff and managers to assess, troubleshoot, and make recommendations for all trauma and tertiary care surgical procedures. This role demonstrates knowledge and a clear understanding of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument functional quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique. The technician upholds high professional and ethical standards in making critical decisions throughout the sterilization process. As a resource and mentor for the SP team and surgical clinical team, the Sterile Processing Technician III assumes a lead role in the absence of the Manager and/or Coordinator. Responsibilities include participating in the distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts, demonstrating a clear understanding of surgical instrumentation, and being responsible for daily record keeping and monitoring of sterilization processes. The technician also conducts orientations for new team members and acts as a patient advocate for the safest sterilization methods. They ensure a safe environment through specific infection control procedures, determine the best processing methods for complex instrumentation, and maintain regular attendance and compliance with Orlando Health policies. The role involves working independently, participating in quality control activities, making recommendations for process improvements, and completing special projects without supervision. The technician understands the relationship of their role to patient care and helps maintain a safe environment for colleagues and patients.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 Years of Experience in Sterile Processing.
• Nationally certified through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
• Maintain required CEU’s in accordance with Certifying body.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge and a clear understanding of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument functional quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique.

• Serves as a resource and mentor for the SP team and for the surgical clinical team.
• Assumes lead role in the absence of Manager and/or Coordinator.
• Participates in distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the requirements of the surgery schedule, pick lists and surgeon’s preference cards.
• Demonstrates a clear understanding of the instrumentation utilized during surgical procedures.
• Responsible for daily record keeping and chemical, mechanical, & biological monitoring relative to sterilization processes.
• Conducts orientation of new team members.
• Acts as the patient’s advocate regarding the most correct and safest form of sterilization for all patient care instrumentation and equipment.
• Assures that through specific infection control procedures a safe environment is maintained.
• Determines the best method of processing ever changing, highly technical tertiary patient care instrumentation and equipment.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
• Works independently in all areas.
• Participates in all unit quality control activities and makes recommendations for process improvement activities.
• Completes special projects, without supervision, as assigned by departmental leadership.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship of their role to patient care.
• Responsible for helping to maintain a safe environment for fellow team members as well as patients.
