About The Position

This role provides operational functions including instrument processing and terminal sterilization for various departments and entities throughout the healthcare system. The Sterile Processing Tech II is responsible for maintaining proper inventory levels of supplies and instruments, participating in performance improvement initiatives, and maintaining current knowledge and pursuing professional growth. This position requires a clear understanding of sterilization control measures, ensuring documentation is complete and accurate, and performing duties in decontamination, assembly, and packaging areas. The role involves inspecting, assembling, and wrapping instrument sets according to policy, reporting equipment malfunctions, and ensuring the availability of loaner sets.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Two years’ experience in preparation, decontamination and sterilization of instrumentation preferred.
  • Certification in sterile processing required.
  • Must be a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) preferred or SPD Technician Certification (CSPDT) from CBSPD.
  • Familiarity with computers and various computer programs.
  • Respectful of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter and intra departmentally.
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrates ability to use the instrument tracking system or preference sheet system for proper tracking and set preparation.
  • Able to interpret and apply professional guidelines/standards (AAMI/AORN).
  • Able to identify problems and recommend solutions/application of critical thinking.
  • Able to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Able to organize and prioritize multiple tasks quickly in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all assigned duties in decontamination area.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain OSHA standards of care and guidelines.
  • Perform all assigned duties while in the assembly and packaging area.
  • Inspect, assemble, and wrap instrument sets according to policy and recommended procedures.
  • Report instrument/equipment malfunction to shift leader or manager.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that loaner sets are available and sterile as required.
