About The Position

The Sterile Processing Tech I is responsible for performing packaging/wrapping and all sterilization functions including Steam, ETO, and STERRAD. This role involves validating sterilization cycles, reviewing and documenting processes, maintaining a clean work environment, and managing inventory and distribution of sterile items. Additionally, the position requires assembling case carts, decontaminating and assembling basic instruments, and communicating effectively with colleagues and customers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • 1 year experience required.

  • Ability to respond quickly to emergent situations.
  • Strength/dexterity to handle surgical instruments/equipment.
  • Ability to access all areas of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Validates each sterilization cycle utilizing biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
  • Reviews, initials, and signs sterilization tape at the end of each cycle to ensure all sterilization parameters were met.
  • Verifies and completes paperwork after biological indicator processing, releasing loads for storage/use.
  • Stores sterile items in appropriate areas.
  • Reports any malfunctioning equipment to the Supervisor and/or Charge Tech immediately.
  • Maintains a neat and clean work environment.
  • Follows established procedures to package/wrap items for Terminal Sterilization.
  • Performs Bowie Dick and Biological Testing for monitoring sterilizers and interprets the results.
  • Documents each sterilization load in Censitrac.
  • Receives supplies from storeroom and outside vendors, ensuring they are devoid of external contaminants.
  • Places supplies on proper shelves, maintaining the first-in, first-out inventory system.
  • Returns unused sterile trays and single peel pack items to the appropriate shelf.
  • Places sterilized items in appropriate areas for distribution to outside departments.
  • Assists with cleaning storage areas and storage shelves.
  • Assembles case carts for MOR, ASC, and L&D according to the preference card.
  • Notes missing supplies and/or instruments during case cart assembly.
  • Scans MOR and ASC instruments to the case cart and then scans the case cart to the room.
  • Delivers case carts to the unit.
  • Wears proper PPE when performing duties in the Decontamination area.
  • Handles infectious waste in accordance with established hospital guidelines.
  • Cleans basic instrument trays.
  • Loads and runs washer/decontaminator and case cart washer.
  • Assembles basic instrument trays with minimal supervision.
  • Assembles/packages items from ancillary areas.
  • Maintains a neat and clean workstation.
  • Comprehends written and verbal instructions, asking clarifying questions when in doubt.
  • Communicates appropriately with staff and customers using Behavior of Excellence guidelines.
  • Documents appropriately (e.g., Load Records, BI Records).
  • Collaborates with co-workers to prioritize workload for productive outputs.
  • Identifies own learning needs and uses resources provided.
  • Gives and receives productive feedback to and from co-workers and supervisor.
  • Answers department phone in a timely and courteous manner, responding promptly to STAT or ASAP requests.
