Performs a variety of instrumentation decontamination, sterilization, packaging, inventory, and distribution tasks according to established department policies and procedures. This role involves disassembling, cleaning, sterilizing, reassembling, and packaging sterile supplies according to specifications and/or manufacturer instructions. The technician will operate various sterilization equipment, adhere to instrument count sheets, and maintain sterile storage guidelines. Safety protocols, including proper body mechanics and protective apparel, are essential. The position also includes retrieving used equipment, examining instruments for cleanliness and functionality, identifying and reporting malfunctioning items, and filling requisitions from hospital departments. Communication with perioperative staff, transporting sterile supplies, assisting with inventory, and maintaining a contaminant-free work environment are also key responsibilities. Documentation of daily activities and adherence to AORN, AAMI, and Joint Commission standards are required. Participation in quality control programs and in-service training is expected.
