About The Position

The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison reports to the Sterile Processing Manager. Under limited supervision, the Sterile Processing Liaison develops customer relationships that enable staff to acquire and maintain the service necessary to support operational and organizational goals. This role serves as a crucial link between the Sterile Processing department and the Operating Room department, ensuring the smooth and uninterrupted daily support of surgical instruments. The liaison is responsible for coordinating decontamination, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments, as well as managing instrument turnover for immediate use or terminal sterilization. They also participate in daily rounds, anticipate the needs of the surgical team, coordinate instrument inventories, and contribute to departmental performance improvement initiatives. Additionally, the liaison functions as a preceptor for new employees and ensures safe patient care in accordance with hospital policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent/GED required
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in perioperative, sterile processing or healthcare support required
  • Extensive SPD knowledge

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician or Certified Surgical Technician, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serves as liaison between the Sterile Processing department and the Operating Room department to assure smooth, uninterrupted daily instrument support while role facilitates continuous communication and performance improvement as it relates to surgical instruments
  • Coordinates sterile processing functions that are necessary to support the OR which includes the decontamination, processing and sterilization of surgical instruments, and processing of the turnover of instruments for immediate use and/or terminal sterilization is achieved.
  • Coordinates with the SP manager to execute plans and projects as necessary to assure continuous performance improvement to the job's responsibilities.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and participates in daily rounds.
  • Coordinates an inventory of instruments and assures that patient/physician needs for specialty surgical instrumentation are met.
  • Contributes to the internal review of department standards with a focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Functions as preceptor for new employees for all surgical specialties.
  • Participates as a member of the team; active in performance improvement and understands relationships between organizational and SPD activities.
  • Provides recommendations on the storage and deletion of instruments on the core storage racks.
  • Responds to immediate physician's needs; develops and implements permanent solution in conjunction with Service Team members and the Sterile Processing Manager/shift coordinator(s).
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
