About The Position

This role is responsible for assembling general and specialty instruments and sets, examining surgical instrumentation for cleanliness, proper assembly, and proper performance. The Sterile Processing Lead acts as a resource on instrument identification, use, location, and availability. They also assist with adjustments in daily work assignments, observe employee activities for quality control, monitor activities of personnel, and notify the SPD Manager of any problems. This position communicates ideas for policy/procedure revisions, assists in ensuring equipment is functioning properly, acts as a liaison between SPD and other departments, and assists in maintaining SPD inventory by ordering and receiving supplies. The Lead demonstrates positive role modeling and works independently to ensure surgical patient needs are met. Additionally, this role involves the decontamination of general and specialty instruments and sets, ensuring soiled instrumentation is decontaminated properly to prevent cross-contamination, wearing proper protective attire, following established decontamination procedures, setting up decontamination equipment, maintaining a clean work area, reporting improper equipment operation, and handling infectious waste according to hospital procedures. The role also supports the implementation of Quality Improvement Ideas, assists in precepting/mentoring/training new technicians, and oversees inventory of supplies and instruments, including managing loaners, consignment, non-conforming trays, and coordinating service/repair with vendors. The Lead also supports and supervises staff to ensure efficient utilization of activities, monitors all sterilizing, decontamination, cleaning, processing, storage, and delivery of supplies, prepares work schedules, coordinates daily assignments, prepares shift reports, checks the surgery schedule, tracks and analyzes associate productivity, and ensures daily processes for scanning, loaner, consignment, and holds sales representatives accountable.

Requirements

• High school diploma
• 2-3 years SPD experience
• Ability to communicate and follow directions
• Computer skills
• Experienced in operating sterilization and monitoring equipment
• Certified Sterile Processing Tech

Responsibilities

• Assembles general and specialty instruments and sets
• Examines surgical instrumentation for cleanliness, proper assembly and proper performance
• Checks instrument performance and identify repair needs
• Acts as resource on instrument identification, appropriate use, location, and availability
• Assists with adjustment in daily work assignments to compensate for fluctuation to work flow in absence of SPD supervisor
• Observes employee activities throughout the shift to ensure that established procedures are being followed for quality control
• Monitors the activities of employees and other personnel in SPD, on weekends and holidays having responsibility for an effective and efficient operation
• Notifies SPD Manager of any problems that occur during the shift
• Communicates ideas for revision of policy and/or procedure
• Assists in ensuring that equipment is properly functioning by communicating equipment malfunctions to manager and/or Engineering/Biomed and filling out appropriate work orders
• Acts as liaison between SPD and other departments to interpret problems that occur and communicate back to them in a courteous and professional manner
• Assists in maintaining SPD inventory by periodically ordering and receiving supplies and maintaining the appropriate paperwork
• Demonstrates positive role model and works independently to assure surgical patients needs are met
• Demonstrates independent function in ensuring that soiled instrumentation of any surgical specialty is decontaminated in a manner that prevents cross-contamination
• Wears proper protective attire when performing decontamination
• Follows established procedures to ensure decontamination completion and correct
• Sets up decontamination equipment for operation and ensures proper function and continuous work flow throughout the shift
• Maintains a neat and clean work area at all times
• Reports improper equipment operation to person in charge
• Handles infectious waste according to established hospital procedure
• Identifies, discusses with manager the problem/improvement opportunities that will be focused on for the year
• Presents problem/improvement opportunities with an action plan
• Assists SPD supervisor in revision of policy and/or procedures
• Monitors quality assurance indicators and reports findings to the Manager and Supervisor
• Assists in precepting, mentoring and/or training of new technicians
• Manages flow of loaners and consignment
• Manages non-conforming trays and ensures return to service in a timely fashion
• Oversees all instruments, maintains par levels, order as necessary
• Coordinates service and repair communications with vendors
• Maintains adequate par levels of all case cart supplies; assures that appropriate inventories are maintained for the operating room
• Monitor all sterilizing, decontamination, cleaning, processing, storage and delivery of supplies activities
• Prepare work schedule to assure appropriate staff coverage
• Coordinate daily assignments, make adjustments to accommodate work flow
• Prepares shift report to facilitate communication of work assignments using the Daily Management Board
• Checks the surgery schedule; communicates instrumentation priorities to the shift
• Tracks and analyzes associate productivity, sets productivity standards and provides feedback to associates and Manager/Supervisor on a regular basis
• Ensures daily processes for scanning, loaner, consignment and holds sales representative accountable to agreed upon delivery timeframes and reports issues to Manager and/or Supervisor
