About The Position

The Sterile Processing Lead at the Oakland Oncology Surgery Center oversees, organizes, and coordinates the overall operation of sterilization and care of surgical instruments. This role includes managing staffing and work assignments, directing and implementing policies, procedures, and protocols to improve workflow, efficiency, and quality assurance. The Lead ensures timely delivery of assessments and oversees the efficient maintenance and decontamination of all equipment. They work independently to support the department's functionality by disinfecting and distributing supplies, and performing equipment maintenance, testing, and setup as needed. The position ensures that treatment is provided in a manner consistent with best practices, accreditation standards, and State and Federal regulations.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • 4 years recent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise of surgical tools, procedures, views, and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
  • Time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadline.
  • Broad knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Prioritize and delegate assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve department objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Work autonomously, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
  • Identify, evaluate and resolve complex issues that may arise in the department.
  • Ensure the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI).
  • Build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses and monitors the workload and assigns duties, adjusts assignments, and provides input and assistance to fellow staff.
  • Oversees or performs all phases of the sterilization process as needed, including inventory, disinfection of reusable instruments, operating room preparation and more.
  • Maintains, assembles and repairs all surgical equipment as necessary in a manner that is safe and consistent with Infection Control guidelines.
  • Ensures the completion of routine and priority tasks within established departmental time frames.
  • Mentors and fosters a constructive environment that helps students and new professionals build confidence in their skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • May perform clerical tasks such as retrieving, entering and revising patient electronic health records.
  • Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to supply inventory and orders new supplies when necessary.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment after each procedure.
  • Inspects and calibrates equipment accordingly for proper operation and records the quality control (QC) results, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Performs decontamination, correct assembly, and sterile processing of all surgical instrumentation used at the surgery center or hospital.
  • Maintains strictest confidence of all patients protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
  • Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and certification requirements.
