About The Position
The Sterile Processing Clerk (Instrument Processing Technician) maintains instruments and equipment in optimal condition and prepares instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies for surgical patients. The role functions under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse and includes maintaining the instrument processing area or department. It may also include crossover duties in other areas, such as purchasing supplies and managing inventory according to facility policy and management guidance.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED required.
- Understanding of sterilization and high-level disinfection technologies, including industry-standard principles and practices, required.
- Successful completion of a BCLS course within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current BCLS certification, required.
Nice To Haves
- Prior experience in instrument processing.
- Prior experience as a surgical technologist or procedure technologist.
- Certification in instrument processing.
Responsibilities
- Maintain instruments and equipment in an optimal fashion and prepare instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies for surgical patients.
- Function as an Instrument Processing Technician under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Apply knowledge of sterilization procedures, aseptic technique, and instrument and equipment maintenance and care.
- Follow standards and practices for sterile technique.
- Clean and/or disinfect instruments and equipment after use and return them to the proper area, in the appropriate sequence, for storage or processing.
- Determine the sterilization and disinfection methods required for specific instruments and equipment.
- Clean, wrap, sterilize, and disinfect instruments and equipment, and maintain the functions of the instrument processing area or department.
- Perform crossover duties in other areas, including purchasing supplies and managing inventory according to facility policy and management guidance.
