About The Position

Baystate Health, a nationally recognized leader in healthcare quality and safety, is seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician Lead for Compounding/TPN. This is a full-time, 40-hour position with an assigned schedule between 6 am and 10:30 pm, requiring every third weekend and holiday rotation. The role involves assisting in various pharmacy department activities under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, with a focus on leadership within a specific area or function. The Certified Pharmacy Technician Lead will act as a subject matter expert, supporting employee training, managing accountability, and reporting on operational metrics and regulatory compliance. Key responsibilities include drug distribution, dedication to quality improvement initiatives, customer service, teamwork, and maintaining attendance standards. The position requires a commitment to patient-centered care and a thorough understanding of drug distribution workflows, medication safety, and quality improvement.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician in an acute care setting and experience in the area/technology/system they will be leading (required)
  • High School Diploma, GED or HiSet
  • Pharmacy Technician License for State of Massachusetts (required)
  • PTCB - National Certification is required for Acute Care (required)
  • GED or HiSET (Required)
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • Pharmacy Technician - Other
  • Possesses good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Understands the principles of staff engagement
  • Demonstrated math skills

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the position to which they are assigned and performs various functions associated with the institutional drug distribution system and per regulatory and compliance standards.
  • Obtains a basic knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department. This includes identifying medications that are light-sensitive, requires refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous. The employee is also able to use references to locate stability information or material safety data sheets.
  • Operates automated technology (Pyxis, compounders, computers, etc.) in accordance with policy, procedures, and manufacturing instructions.
  • Appropriately utilizes automated dispensing machines to facilitate medication dispensing per BH policy and procedure.
  • Accurately prepares and distributes.
  • Accurately refills, checks, locks, and stickers code carts according to policy/procedure.
  • Understands the various satellites and shifts and is familiar with the different specialty areas and procedures.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of medication error prevention methods and handling/preparation techniques for high-risk or high-alert medications, including LASA medications.
  • Gains an understanding of population-specific preparation procedures (geriatric, adult, pediatric, and neonatal dosage forms and products).
  • Leads/Participates in QI initiatives related to their work area.
  • Interacts effectively with other members of the department and health care team regularly.
  • Maintains attentiveness to the rights of patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Triage orders, determine priorities, processes orders, and notify the pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Receives and refers incoming calls for the department that handles the pharmacy windows.
  • Serves as trainer and educator for employees being training in specialty areas.
  • Employee is aware of and follows BH attendance policy.
