About The Position

This position provides direct technical and operational leadership to welders and ensures welded steel components are produced in accordance with engineering drawings, approved welding procedures, applicable specifications, company quality requirements, and production schedules. The Steel Welding Supervisor is responsible for maintaining proper welding practices, monitoring welder performance, ensuring compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), and ensuring quality products through production. The position works closely with Engineering, Quality, and Production Management to ensure weld quality and continuously improve structural steel fabrication processes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years’ experience as a supervisor in a manufacturing environment
  • 5-7 years’ welding MIG steel
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • MIG Welding Certificate D1.1
  • Use and read a tape measurer
  • Read English
  • Proficient in basic math
  • Able to use fixtures
  • Read blueprints
  • Use quality control tools such as fillet gauges

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate daily steel welding activities.
  • Review production schedules, work orders, and welding requirements before work begins.
  • Ensure welders are using the correct welding process, filler metal, shielding gas, machine settings, joint preparation, and approved WPS.
  • Verify proper joint configuration, fit-up, alignment, and material preparation prior to welding.
  • Ensure weld size, length, location, sequence, and configuration conform to engineering drawings and applicable specifications.
  • Monitor welding sequence and techniques to minimize distortion and maintain dimensional requirements.
  • Ensure structural welds are completed only by personnel qualified for the applicable welding process, position, material, and procedure when qualification is required.
  • Ensure completed structural assemblies meet dimensional and workmanship requirements before being released to the next operation.
  • Coordinate production priorities with other manufacturing departments to maintain workflow and schedule attainment.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable structural welding requirements, including AWS D1.1/D1.1M Structural Welding Code – Steel when specified by engineering, customer, contract, or company requirements.
  • Ensure welders understand and follow applicable WPS requirements.
  • Verify required welding parameters remain within the ranges established by the applicable WPS.
  • Monitor structural welds for compliance with established workmanship and acceptance requirements.
  • Assist with welder qualification testing and skills assessments.
  • Evaluate new welders for technical capability before assigning structural welding work.
  • Train and coach welders on WPS requirements.
  • Identify skill gaps and establish appropriate retraining or development plans.
  • Perform routine visual observations of structural welding activities and completed welds.
  • Work closely with Quality personnel responsible for final weld acceptance.
  • Assist with root-cause investigations involving structural weld failures or recurring defects.
  • Support corrective and preventive actions resulting from internal inspections, customer complaints, warranty concerns, or audits.
  • Ensure required PPE is properly worn and maintained.
  • Maintain acceptable housekeeping and organization throughout structural welding areas.
  • Provide daily leadership and direction to structural welders and fabricators.
  • Set clear expectations for safety, attendance, productivity, quality, workmanship, and conduct.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations.
  • Monitor and address performance, attendance, conduct, and employee-relations concerns in coordination with Human Resources.
  • Participate in interviewing and selection of welding personnel.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing and recommend hiring or overtime based on production requirements.
  • Develop cross-training plans to increase department flexibility and reduce dependence on individual employees.
  • Develop an improved weld test process for welding candidates.
  • Identify opportunities to improve welding productivity, consistency, ergonomics, quality, and safety.
  • Work with Engineering to improve joint design, weld accessibility, fixture design, fabrication sequence, and manufacturability.
