About The Position

The position of the Steel Processing Machine Operator/Crew Member is responsible for deriving information from production work orders and applying that information to complete various tasks relating to the preparation and processing of flat-rolled steel coils. This individual will work side-by-side with members of the Steel Processing production crew and perform tasks associated directly with but not limited to the operation of processing machinery, overhead cranes, forklifts, and pneumatic tools.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must comply with all relevant company safety requirements.
  • Must demonstrate basic mathematical aptitude with fractions and decimals.
  • Must possess the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide to the thousandth of an inch (0.001”).
  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to learn and proficiently use a PC for reporting production.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a complex, team-oriented environment.
  • Must be able to continuously stand, stoop, bend, push, and pull throughout the day.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lb. and up to 30 lb. overhead.
  • Ability to work around heavy machinery in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
  • Ability to write and read routine reports or job orders.
  • Ability to understand job instructions.
  • Ability to speak, read and hear English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to interpret, understand, and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Intermediate computer skills including the ability to master new computer applications quickly.
  • Attendance is required Monday through Friday within normal business hours as established by the supervisor.
  • Employees may be required to work overtime.
  • Willingness to work during second shift hours will be required.
  • Regularly required to sit; walk and stand; use hands, handle, or feel; and required to speak, read, and hear English.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a flat-rolled steel processing or manufacturing environment preferred but not required; we will provide training.
  • Previous forklift and overhead crane experience preferred but not required (will train).

Responsibilities

  • Interprets order specification/special instructions and ensures all production materials are at machines prior to set-up.
  • Ensures adequate station supplies and materials for continuous operation.
  • Performs complex set-ups and changeovers individually.
  • Makes required adjustments to ensure accuracy of slitter set-ups / cut to length line set-ups in adherence to material/customer specifications.
  • Approves own set-ups for a quality production run.
  • Operates slitting line / cut to length line in a safe and efficient manner within the parameters of machine’s operating specifications.
  • Applies knowledge and skills in performing operator maintenance, general maintenance, troubleshooting, and corrective action pertaining to machinery and process.
  • Packages steel coils / steel sheets per product specifications.
  • Removes finished material and properly places in designated locations.
  • Records and reports all finished production.
  • Completes and processes all related documentation via computer (data entry) or handwritten methods.
  • Trains, assists, and supports other team members in problem solving, meeting department goals, and adherence to the company’s ongoing safety initiative.
  • Continuously reviews current processes and searches out improvement methods to improve product/process quality, reduce waste, rework, and unnecessary work that adds no value to the work or process.
  • Performs general housekeeping tasks and waste removal within department and assists other areas as required.
  • Assists/supports in other job functions within department or other company processes within scope and ability, based on business need.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
