About The Position

The Structural & Miscellaneous Steel Estimator plays a key role in developing accurate and competitive estimates for steel fabrication and erection projects. This position requires leading estimates with limited supervision, focusing on structural steel and miscellaneous metals (stairs, rails, embeds, etc.). In this role, you will collaborate with preconstruction, detailing, fabrication, and field teams to ensure complete scope coverage, competitive pricing, and successful project pursuits.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and estimating software (Fabtrol, Tekla EPM – preferred but not required)
  • Ability to read and interpret project documents including drawings and specifications; as well as basic connection details and shop drawings
  • Working knowledge of Steel fabrication processes, erection means and methods, and industry standards (AISC, AWS)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines
  • Effective communication and coordination skills
  • Problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • Growth mindset with desire to advance into Senior Estimator role

Responsibilities

  • Participate in estimate planning and pre-bid meetings
  • Review structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and bid documents with a focus on steel scope completeness
  • Identify scope gaps, risks, and constructability concerns
  • Coordinate RFIs with internal teams, engineers, and clients when information is missing or unclear
  • Participate in site visits to understand field conditions impacting steel erection
  • Lead estimates with limited supervision on small to mid-sized projects
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel (beams, columns, bracing) and miscellaneous metals (stairs, handrails, ladders, embeds)
  • Develop estimates including material costs, fabrication labor and shop operations, and erection labor, equipment, and crane requirements
  • Assist in building unit-based pricing and historical cost data
  • Take ownership of specific scopes and coordinate across disciplines
  • Prepare scope clarifications, exclusions, and assumptions
  • Lead scope review discussions during estimate reviews
  • Compile complete estimates and support final proposal submission
  • Assists with the appropriate resources to determine the project specific tax and insurance requirements
  • Work with project team or contractor to understand project schedule
  • Assist in developing and leading Estimate Plan meetings
  • Interpret drawings and estimate in accordance with AISC and AWS standards
  • Understand basic connection concepts, fabrication processes, and erection sequencing
  • Coordinate with detailing teams on connection assumptions and detailing scope gaps
  • Evaluate material types (WF, plate, HSS, pipe) and market conditions
  • Understand impact of coatings (paint, galvanizing) on cost and schedule
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from steel suppliers, service centers, coating/galvanizing vendors, and erection subcontractors
  • Buy out items (Joist, Deck, Grating, ETC.)
  • Level and analyze vendor quotes to ensure complete scope coverage
  • Assist in building and maintaining relationships with vendors and subcontractors
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and scope reviews
  • Assist with project turnover to operations teams
  • Support change order pricing and cost validation
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement of estimating processes
  • Assist project management with scope and budget clarification
