About The Position

The Statistician supports clinical and translational research initiatives within the Department of Surgery by collaborating closely with general surgeons, surgical fellows, residents, and research staff on study design, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results. The incumbent provides expert guidance on research methodology and data analysis across a wide range of surgical research projects, including clinical trials, observational studies, outcomes research, and quality improvement initiatives. The Statistician plays a key role in developing rigorous research protocols, ensuring appropriate statistical methods are applied, and assisting in the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and grant applications. The incumbent also contributes to the education and mentorship of surgical trainees in research methodology and statistical literacy to support high-quality scholarly activity within the department.

Requirements

  • Post-graduate degree in Statistics.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with surgeons, residents, fellows, and research staff to design scientifically rigorous clinical research studies.
  • Provides consultation on research methodology, including study design, sample size calculations, power analysis, and statistical analysis plans.
  • Advises investigators on appropriate statistical approaches for clinical, translational, and health services research.
  • Performs statistical analyses using statistical software such as R, SAS, SPSS, or Stata.
  • Develops reproducible workflows for data cleaning, validation, and statistical analysis.
  • Interprets statistical results and translate findings into clinically meaningful conclusions for surgical investigators.
  • Guides residents and fellows on development of research projects from study conception through analysis and publication.
  • Supports residents’ statistical literacy through consultation and educational activities.
  • Participates in research meetings, protocol development discussions, and divisional academic activities.
  • Drafts research protocols, grant applications, abstracts, and manuscripts.
  • Contributes to statistical sections of grant proposals and scientific publications.
  • Ensures statistical reporting meets standards required by peer-reviewed journals and funding agencies.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of research databases (e.g., REDCap).
  • Manages and validates research datasets to ensure data quality, integrity, and completeness.
  • Maintains compliance with institutional policies, IRB requirements, and data governance standards.
  • Performs other responsibilities, as required.

Benefits

  • Compensation Range $6,251.00 - $8,986.00 CAD Monthly
