They ensure that all equipment, machinery, and systems are functioning normally and safely, and comply with all applicable safety rules and regulations. This role may involve operating computerized building management systems, preventative or predictive maintenance systems, or SCADA systems. Responsibilities include inspecting and testing machinery and equipment for safe and efficient operation, testing fire prevention equipment, and inspecting water storage and distribution systems. Stationary Engineers also maintain records of shift operations, handle and store treatment chemicals (including hazardous ones), and may manage industrial or hazardous waste. They interact with contractors, building tenants, and the public, and are responsible for maintaining keys, communications equipment, and security in the absence of security personnel. As part of an emergency response team, they must recognize, evaluate, and respond to hazardous situations. They perform control tests on water samples to determine various quality parameters and regulate treatment chemical dosages. Under supervision, they may conduct water analysis and regulate treatment chemical dosages to maintain water quality in filtration plants, distribution systems, or other large complex facilities. They may also perform water/wastewater analysis as required by the State of California and conduct boiler water and cooling tower chemical tests to monitor and control organism growth.
