About The Position

Stationary Engineers at New York City Transit are responsible for operating, maintaining, and adjusting steam power plant and electro-mechanical building equipment. This includes boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, and cooling towers. They also manage equipment for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting in public buildings, municipal pumping stations, and incinerators. The role involves performing periodic inspections, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance. Stationary Engineers may take charge of a watch, directing subordinate personnel, and operating control consoles. They are also responsible for preparing requisitions for parts, instructing and training staff, reading and logging data from meters and gauges, and writing reports. Additionally, they may inspect low-pressure boilers and operate a motor vehicle.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.
  • Must maintain the High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license for the duration of employment.
  • For certain positions, candidates will be required to obtain, within 90 days from the day of appointment, a valid certificate of fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler and/or Air Compressor issued by the New York City Fire Department.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Must be able to understand and be understood in English.
  • Must be able to prove identity and right to work in the United States.
  • Must have a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York with no disqualifying restrictions.
  • Must maintain the Motor Vehicle Driver License for the duration of employment.
  • May be required to undergo a formalized training course during the probationary period.
  • Must complete a probationary period.

  • For promotional candidates: Permanently (not provisionally) employed in the eligible title of High Pressure Plant Tender by the first date of the assessment.
  • For promotional candidates: Not otherwise ineligible.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and electro-mechanical building equipment.
  • Operate, maintain, and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, cooling towers, and associated equipment for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting.
  • Perform periodic inspections of equipment and make minor repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance.
  • Take charge of a watch and direct subordinate personnel.
  • Operate control consoles in control rooms.
  • Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts.
  • Instruct and train subordinates and other personnel.
  • Read meters, gauges, and other recording devices and log the data.
  • Keep records and write reports.
  • Inspect low pressure boilers in accordance with a unified inspection procedure.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Perform related work.
