About The Position

Directs, operates, and maintains powerhouse equipment on an assigned shift. This role involves operating and instructing powerhouse workers in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of boilers, furnaces, and auxiliary equipment. The Stationary Engineer will also make rounds of the powerhouse, read meters and gauges, inspect equipment for malfunctions, and perform necessary repairs and adjustments. Responsibilities include monitoring power consumption, starting and stopping generators and other equipment, adjusting electronic controls, and managing the flow of steam or water. The role also requires maintaining a powerhouse log, recording various readings and maintenance activities, and ensuring sufficient fuel supply. Additionally, the position involves operating computer equipment and specialized programs for data management and equipment control, as well as maintaining gas turbines, compressors, condensate polishers, and water softeners. The Stationary Engineer may also be responsible for cleaning plant and equipment, testing water, adding treatment chemicals, answering telephones and radios, relaying messages, and potentially training student employees or employees in lower pay grades. Assisting other tradespersons may also be required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Formal training in stationary engineer program (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities).
  • Current third class license as a Stationary Steam Engineer issued by Ohio Department of Industrial Relations.
  • Knowledge of installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of powerhouse equipment.
  • Knowledge of water treatment procedures.
  • Skill in operating powerhouse equipment (e.g., gas, oil-fired boilers, turbines, electronic controls, etc.).
  • Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to transmit work directives, to answer telephone).
  • Ability to train and provide effective work direction to other employees.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities.
  • Ability to recognize threatening or unusual conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to apply safety practices.
  • Ability to interpret and apply blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, and calculate percentages).
  • Ability to read (e.g., technical information), write (e.g., work instructions), and accurately follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and instructs powerhouse workers in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of boilers, furnaces, and auxiliary equipment (i.e., turbines, blowers, flow meters, pumps, generators, fans, compressors, chillers and related equipment).
  • Makes rounds of powerhouse; reads meters, gauges, and recording devices; visually inspects equipment to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustments, or lubrication and makes repairs and/or adjustments as required.
  • Monitors power consumption meters; starts, synchronizes, switches, and stops generators, turbines, pumps, compressors, boilers, chillers and related equipment, as needed. Adjusts electronic controls to bring equipment into prescribed ranges; opens and/or closes valves and adjusts regulators to control flow of steam or water through pipelines or to blow sludge and scale from pressurized systems.
  • Maintains powerhouse log; records readings, fuel consumed, power generated, maintenance work performed, and related records; monitors and maintains sufficient fuel supply.
  • Operates computer equipment and programs to input, retrieve, submit and modify data, including interfacing with specialized programs that control equipment.
  • Operates and maintains gas turbines, gas compressors, condensate polishers, and water softeners; may clean plant and equipment, test water, and add water treatment chemicals, as required.
  • May answer telephones and radios and relays messages as necessary.
  • May train and direct student employees or employees in lower pay grade; may participate in training new employees.
  • May assist other tradespersons as required.
  • Performs related duties as required.
