About The Position

Operate St Joseph Mercy Hospital Steam Plant Boilers ensuring an uninterrupted supply of steam to the campus for heating, humidification, sterilization, cooking and auxiliary equipment. Start, operate/monitor, Chilled Water System which includes Centrifugal Chillers, primary and secondary pumps, cooling towers, and water treatment for the associated system. Monitor diesel generators used to supply campus with emergency electricity. Monitor the main Fire Pumps for the Campus and the Underground Fuel Storage Tanks. Maintain and monitor Medical Air, Control Air Systems, and Domestic Water Booster system located within Steam Plant. Regularly inspect all Plant machinery to detect malfunctions and ensure optimal running conditions. Adjust and/or repair equipment through hands on involvement, through co-worker and/or contractor assistance. Ensure Plant operation is compliant with all regulatory agencies. Monitor facility management system (METASYS) to respond, dispatch and/or assist others with alarm-generating conditions. Maintain all water chemistry with the Boilers and Chilled Water Systems.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in Large Central Heating and Chilled Water Plant.
  • Minimum of High Pressure Boiler License, from City of Detroit, Dearborn or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1st Class Refrigeration License, from Detroit, Dearborn, or other municipality.
  • State of Michigan Mechanical Contractors License with #8 Unlimited Refrigeration is acceptable in lieu of the City license.
  • Universal EPA Refrigerant certification
  • Capable of working various shifts
  • Knowledge of principles of electricity, electronics, mathematics, and physics, as well as basic computer skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Products including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Familiar with DDC Control Systems e.g. Johnson Controls Metasys, Plant Wide Controller, and Preferred Instruments.
  • Familiar with Refrigeration Temperature monitoring systems, Temp Trak.
  • Knowledge of Asset Management and Time Allocation Software, Aims.
  • Ability to work from ladders, aerial lifts and/or multi-story structures or equipment.
  • Ability to work overtime, when situations arise and weekends/holidays throughout the calendar year.
  • Able to work independently and unsupervised.
  • Ability to perform various aspects of service work, electrical troubleshooting, brazing, soft soldering, pump service including bearings and seal replacements.
  • Must have strong communication skills both written and verbal, must be able to complete all documentation in a neat and timely manner.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Willing to attend onsite as well as offsite training.
  • Must be able to interpret and read gauges, thermometers, meters and other monitoring devices.
  • Must be able to interpret schematics from prints and drawings.
  • Must be able to configure and control equipment from local equipment interfaces and from remote interfaces of the Facility Management System.
  • Must be familiar with all safety devices for High Pressure Steam Boilers and all ancillary steam devices.
  • Must be familiar with all safeties associated with High and Low Pressure refrigerant chillers.

  • Prior Healthcare or Hospital work experience is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Start/Stop Boilers and maintain the generation of a continuous supply of steam to the campus for heating, humidification, sterilization, cooking and auxiliary equipment.
  • Start, Operate and Monitor Chilled water systems in the central plant. System includes Centrifugal Chillers, Primary/Secondary pumps, Cooling towers and water treatment for the associated system.
  • Monitor operations of four Diesel 2000 KW generators used to supply campus with emergency electricity.
  • Monitor and respond to problems with the Fire Pumps, and Domestic water booster pumps.
  • Test and treat the boiler water, condensate, chilled water and condenser water, using specific chemicals and tests.
  • Regularly inspect all plant machinery to detect malfunctions and ensure optimal running conditions.
  • Adjust and/or repair equipment through hands on involvement, either independently or with assistance of coworkers or contractors.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor Multi-facility management system (Metasys) to respond, dispatch and/or assist others with alarm-generated conditions.
  • Maintain/ monitor Medical Air compressors and Control Air compressors located in the Central Plant.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Coordinator, Energy Manager or Mechanical Systems Manager.
  • Occasional equipment resets in other areas of facility.
