About The Position

This position can be filled as either an Apprentice Station Technician or a Journeyman Station Technician. The Journeyman Station Technician performs substation maintenance and construction activities, developing sound, effective, and safe work habits. The Apprentice Station Technician Levels I-V participates in the substation apprentice training program, performs substation maintenance and construction activities, and develops sound, effective, and safe work habits. The apprentice program requires a minimum of five years to complete, followed by an additional year at the Station Technician level. It includes extensive on-the-job training, formal training, and written study, some of which must be completed outside of work hours. Satisfactory performance and continuous progress toward completion of the program are required.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or a GED
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: Operation of light and/or heavy equipment such as cranes or boom trucks, digger equipment, bucket trucks, or aerial man lift devices.
  • Construction, maintenance, or operation of an electrical distribution or transmission system.
  • General construction or building experience as an electrician or apprentice electrician.
  • Previous schools or training (including military) related to the electrical industry.
  • Previous experience in any of the following categories: Working in climbing tools.
  • Working from aerial man lift devices.
  • Working at heights up to 120 feet or more.
  • Working in electrical substations.
  • Working on or near high voltage AC circuits.
  • Have previous experience or training with computers or digital and/or electronic equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively with other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to use a personal computer to access the intranet and Microsoft Office software as required.
  • Must live within a thirty-mile radius of specified work location.
  • Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and overnight travel on short notice.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of six years' experience in the maintenance of transmission level substations, or completion of a certified apprentice training program in substation maintenance and two years' experience.
  • Related education may be substituted for experience at a rate of one year of education for two years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Safely performing maintenance on all station equipment including, but not limited to, transformers, oil circuit breakers, reclosers, and regulators in a manner to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Safe and proper installation, testing, and energization of station equipment.
  • Proper and safe use of various testing equipment such as power factor and insulation, transformer turns ratio (TTR), breaker timing, resistance, sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) and Doble test equipment.
  • Properly and safely installing and energizing mobile substations.
  • Properly and safely removing stations from service and upgrading and rebuilding existing stations.
  • Coordinating with others in the department and other departments to ensure timely scheduling and completion of projects.
  • Coordinating with Transmission Operators on clearances and switching orders to ensure safe operations.
  • Testing and maintaining tools and equipment such as hot sticks and aerial basket trucks in a safe and good working condition.
  • Maintaining accurate and current reports and records related to area of responsibility.
  • Maintaining vehicles and working environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Successfully completing all the requirements of the substation technician apprentice training program including formal training, on-the-job training, and written study, some of which must be completed outside of work hours.
  • Learning to perform and performing at a level appropriate to training, the duties of a Journeyman Substation Technician.
