System Service Worker (Station Cleaner): Under general supervision, System Service Workers perform a variety of janitorial duties to maintain BART stations, shops, offices, walkways, and other public areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Duties may include cleaning floors, restrooms, elevators, escalators, fare equipment, windows, sidewalks, and other station facilities; responding to urgent cleanup needs; and documenting completed work. Utility Worker (Rail Car Cleaner): Under general supervision, Utility Workers perform a variety of janitorial duties to maintain BART rail cars, rolling stock shops, offices, and related work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Duties may include removing trash, vacuuming and shampooing carpets and seats, cleaning walls, doors, windows, restrooms, shop floors, service pits, and other facilities, and documenting completed work.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.
  • One year of experience which will have provided a familiarity with janitorial procedures, equipment, and supplies.
  • Must have physical capability to perform strenuous physical labor, including sufficient strength to lift trash containers and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and off-hour shifts.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining large, high-traffic facilities accessible to the public, such as hospitals, schools, airports, grocery stores, or transit facilities.
  • Construction cleanup experience is also desirable.
  • Experience with commercial or industrial janitorial services.
  • Knowledge of safe cleaning practices, including the proper use of cleaning chemicals and protective equipment.
  • Experience safely operating commercial floor-cleaning equipment, such as ride-on scrubbers and sweepers.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work independently, interact professionally with the public, prepare legible reports, and maintain accurate work records.
  • Experience cleaning rail cars, buses, aircraft, or other large commercial vehicles, facilities, or equipment.
  • Experience with commercial or industrial janitorial services, particularly in shops, maintenance facilities, warehouses, or similar environments.
  • Experience safely operating commercial cleaning equipment and using hand and power tools to vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, buff, and shampoo various surfaces.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, follow oral and written instructions, work independently and cooperatively, prepare legible reports, and maintain accurate work records.
  • Knowledge of janitorial procedures, methods, supplies, tools and equipment safe working practices and techniques.
  • Skill in using hand tools and power equipment to vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, buff, shampoo, and otherwise clean varied surfaces and fixtures.
  • Skill in using detergents and cleaning solutions correctly and safely.
  • Skill in following oral and written directions; working independently without immediate supervision.
  • Skill in working cooperatively with others.
  • Skill in responding appropriately to patron questions.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate basic logs and records of work performed.

  • Construction cleanup experience is also desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains District stations in a clean and orderly condition by sweeping, scrubbing, waxing and cleaning floors, cleaning and polishing elevators, escalators, ticket machines, gates and fixtures, washing windows and windbreakers and emptying trash containers; clears leaves, trash and debris; sweeps and cleans walkways, patios and sidewalks from the station to the street and all bus stops on District property.
  • Cleans District office areas by vacuuming floors, carpets and upholstery, shampooing carpets and upholstery, emptying ashtrays and trash cans, dusting and washing chairs, desks, files and other surfaces and washing walls and doors.
  • Cleans and disinfects restroom surfaces and fixtures using detergents and chemicals.
  • Restocks restrooms with services supplies such as soap and paper goods.
  • Performs heavy cleaning in shop areas, including service pits, truck bays and docks and floor areas.
  • Ensuring that debris and grease are removed in employee lunchroom areas, cleans sink, stove, refrigerator and tables in addition to floor and wall areas.
  • Steam cleans tools or parts as may be required.
  • Documents work performed; notifies crew leader or supervisor of required maintenance.
  • Responds to urgent cleanup in parking lots, garages, trains, offices, and stations as required; and performs heavy cleaning in yards and shops.
  • Removes trash, vacuuming and shampooing carpets and seats, cleaning walls, doors, windows, restrooms, shop floors, service pits, and other facilities, and documenting completed work.
