About The Position

This vocational position provides entry-level marketable job skills to inmate students within an adult educational correctional system/facility by delivering instruction, training and assessments in Construction curriculum in accordance with the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) and/or the Colorado State Licensing Board (if applicable). The position involves teaching and mentoring inmate students, determining their educational needs, planning course content, developing teaching aids, lecturing on theories, and administering performance assessments. It also requires ensuring the security, safety, supervision, and monitoring of inmate students in the proper use and storage of equipment, tools, keys, and hazardous materials. The role includes preparing reports, maintaining records, observing and evaluating student progress, documenting achievements, providing oversight of a Computer Based Testing lab, justifying budget requests, participating in professional development, and collaborating with fellow teachers. A significant aspect of the role involves maintaining safety and security by training inmates, working security posts, performing inmate counts, shakedowns, searches, escorts, movement control, and managing inmate access to classrooms, all while adhering to CDOC regulations and promoting a safe and secure work environment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Construction Industry or related field of study.
  • Completed 4,000 hours of occupational experience in a construction industry related to the credential area within the last seven (7) years as per the requirements of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).
  • Relevant occupational experience includes: installing drywall, framing, carpentry, building structure repair, siding, painting, ceramic tiling, bricklaying, and pouring cement.
  • Must possess or obtain a CCCS post-secondary credential in the construction field in compliance with the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) within six (6) months of date of hire.
  • Must obtain a Colorado Community College Professional Teacher Credential within three (3) years of date of hire.
  • Must maintain a Colorado Community College Initial/Professional Teacher Credential through the duration of employment.

  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application.
  • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently.
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner.
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders.

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and mentor inmate students individually or in large and small group classrooms promoting occupational, academic and transitional performance skills.
  • Determine educational needs of inmate students to develop short and long term goals.
  • Plan course content and develop methods of instruction.
  • Develop and implement competency-based teaching aids such as instructional software, multimedia visual aids, or study materials.
  • Lecture on theories, concepts and terminology of customer service.
  • Select and administer appropriate performance assessments to inmate students to measure progress, course completion requirements, and to evaluate training/testing effectiveness.
  • Ensure security, safety, supervision and monitoring of inmate students in the proper use, storage and inventory of equipment tools, keys and hazardous materials in accordance with CDOC regulations.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records such as student grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details.
  • Observe and evaluate inmate students' work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Document inmate achievements, competencies and contact hours towards completion of certificate requirements.
  • Provide oversight and coordination of Computer Based Testing lab and record security to include test proctoring of all computer based testing.
  • Justify accuracy and usage of budget requests.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrates relevant information into training programs.
  • Commit to teamwork and collaboration with fellow teachers in a cooperative effort to promote mutual and continued guidance and improvements.
  • Actively contribute to the safety and security of the facility through effective inmate management and promoting conflict resolution and solutions.
  • Endorse and adhere to the CDOC Mission and Vision promoting commitment and integrity.
  • Maintain Colorado Community College credential.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain safety and security by training inmates, and will be required to work security posts, perform inmate counts, shakedowns, searches, escorts, movement control, and inmate access to classrooms.
  • Promote a safe and secure work environment through conscientious observation and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline.
