About The Position

This position provides High School Equivalency (HSE) Instruction within an adult educational correctional system/facility by delivering instruction, training and assessments. Instruction is in accordance with the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) approved Certificate of Accomplishment Curriculum for appropriate Adult Basic Education levels.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in an education-related field.
• Must possess at least one of the following credentials: Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher License (Individuals with a Colorado Initial License upon hire must obtain the Colorado Professional Teacher License within three (3) years of date of hire), Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABE), or Colorado Interim Authorization (out of state applicants may be eligible).
• For out-of-state applicants: Must possess the appropriate educator license for your state. A copy of your license MUST be scanned and uploaded to this application at the time your application is submitted.
• A copy of your college transcripts noting type of degree and date conferred MUST be scanned and uploaded to this application at the time your application is submitted.

• Must be 21 years of age.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application.
• Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
• Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
• Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
• Successfully pass a drug test.
• Successfully complete a background investigation.

Nice To Haves

• Experience teaching and assessing high-risk or incarcerated adults or youth.

Responsibilities

• Teaches and mentors inmate students individually or in large and small group classrooms promoting occupational, academic and transitional performance skills.
• Determines educational needs of inmate students to develop short and long term goals.
• Plans course content and develops methods of instruction.
• Develops and implements competency-based teaching aids such as instructional software, multimedia visual aids, or study materials.
• Provides hands-on training to teach and demonstrate skills, techniques, methods and procedures.
• Selects and administers appropriate oral, written and/or performance assessments to inmate students to measure progress, course completion requirements, and to evaluate training/testing effectiveness.
• Prepares reports and maintains records such as inmate student grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details.
• Observes and evaluates inmate students' work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement.
• Justifies accuracy and usage of budget requests.
• Participates in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrates relevant information into training programs.
• Commits to teamwork and collaboration with fellow teachers in a cooperative effort to promote mutual and continued guidance and improvements.
• Actively contributes to the safety and security of the facility through effective inmate management and promoting conflict resolution and solutions.
• Encourages and promotes critical thinking, self-discipline and self-motivation for the inmate student population in order to provide the skills necessary to reintegrate into society.
• Maintains safety and security by training inmates; and occasionally or in an emergent situation perform inmate counts, shakedowns, searches, escorts, movement control, and inmate access to classrooms.
• Promotes a safe and secure work environment through conscientious observation and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline.
