About The Position

Volunteers of America is a federal and state-funded comprehensive early childhood education program focused on child development, including cognitive, physical, and social-emotional growth. The program emphasizes family engagement and provides resources for low-income families in health, nutrition, and community services. The State Preschool Teacher facilitates safe and healthy learning activities for children aged 2-5, promoting play-based learning to foster social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development. They plan individual and group activities aligned with the Creative Curriculum, create a learning environment that supports school readiness, and involve parents in their child's education. The role also involves assisting parents in understanding child development and identifying home-based educational activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate's degree.
  • CA Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.
  • Ability to pass fingerprints, criminal investigation screening, TB and health screenings.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite.

  • In bilingual settings, communicates both verbally and in writing, with both the parents and the children in their language when possible.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate safe and healthy learning activities for children aged 2-5, promoting play-based learning for social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth.
  • Plan individual and group activities according to a child’s age and developmental level, following the guidelines of the Creative Curriculum.
  • Provide children with a learning environment and varied experiences to develop school readiness skills.
  • Involve parents in the educational activities of the program to enhance their role in the child’s education and development.
  • Assist parents to increase knowledge, understanding, skills, and experience in child growth and development.
  • Identify and reinforce experiences that occur in the home that parents can utilize as educational activities for their children.
  • Develop a plan to ensure the safety of children within the group, utilizing indoor and outdoor facilities.
  • Complete daily health and safety checklists and report needed repairs and/or timely maintenance to the Center Coordinator.
  • Inspect facilities for hazardous conditions and unsafe environments and materials.
  • Remove all debris, and all hazardous and unsafe equipment and materials.
  • Supervise activities of children to ensure their safety.
  • Recognize and report accidents, illnesses, and suspected child abuse to appropriate personnel according to timelines.
  • Conduct monthly emergency drills.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly classroom, kept free of garbage and debris.
  • Plan and conduct classroom activities that encourage healthy habits appropriate to the child.
  • Select and use materials and equipment that stimulate development in the children.
  • Include materials that reflect the children’s culture(s) and use them appropriately.
  • Plan and facilitate daily learning activities for children based on children’s interests in alignment with the Creative Curriculum to support School Readiness in all learning domains.
  • Write and maintain accurate records and child observations to complete accurate child assessments (DRDP) 2 times per year.
  • Design an individual development plan (IDP) for each child in collaboration with the parent, identifying learning goals and activities for home and school.
  • Provide diaper changes and meet toileting needs of children, as needed.
  • Facilitate healthy habits with assistance such as tooth brushing and handwashing.
  • Conduct staff-parent conferences for each family with an enrolled child each program year, per requirements; two parent-teacher conferences.
  • Attend all required in-service training, orientations, workshops, and seminars.
  • Follow approved agency procedures and maintain them under property security.
  • Submit all required reports and administrative forms accurately, completely, and timely, including enrollment and attendance information.
  • Actively participate in recruiting and assisting parents who walk in for enrollment information and/or participate in formal recruitment activities as assigned.
  • Encourage participation in parent groups at the center and provide opportunities for parents to use their skills and talents in the group.
  • In bilingual settings, communicate verbally and in writing with both parents and children in their language when possible.
  • Conduct parent education meetings, including orientation, discussion of IPP, child development, curriculum, and parenting skills.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as scheduled and/or assigned.
  • Perform special projects and/or other related duties as assigned.
  • Abide by Agency Code of Conduct and policies, including applicable laws such as Mandated Reporting.
