The State Police Medical Officer position with the Pennsylvania State Police offers a chance to ensure that our staff can safely perform important job duties. This position provides medical guidance and administrative oversight to support the wellbeing and readiness of Cadets, Liquor Enforcement Officer Trainees, and other personnel. You will help evaluate medical conditions, review medical records, assess job-related injuries, and support agency protocols related to fitness for duty.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved U.S. residency training program in the medical specialty of family practice, internal medicine, or occupational medicine
  • Three years of professional medical experience
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Boards of Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Occupational Medicine
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Current Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for prescribing scheduled medication
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Possess a current Federal Aviation Administration certification as an Aviation Medical Examiner within one year of appointment

Responsibilities

  • Examine trainees to diagnose illnesses or injuries and determine appropriate care
  • Assess medical records of candidates and personnel to determine suitability for appointment or duty
  • Evaluate work-related injury and disability claims and coordinate care recommendations
  • Review limited duty assignments and assess medication effects on critical job performance
  • Provide expert recommendations for fitness for duty cases and agency policy needs
