About The Position

This is a supervisory level of work in programs of the state park system. A State Park Ranger Supervisor is responsible for the operation of a small park facility and supervises the work of staff in all areas of park operations: visitor services, resource development and protection, facility, recreation, interpretive services, property management, collection and processing of park system revenue, concessions and maintenance. State Park Ranger Supervisor directly supervises one or more subordinate maintenance staff, State Park Rangers, administrative assistants, and may supervise clerical staff and short and long term contractual positions. Managerial supervision is received from a State Park Ranger Assistant Manager, State Park Ranger Manager or other higher-level designated managerial position. Employees are subject to call-in, and may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and to work outdoors in all kinds of weather. The work may require lifting objects weighing twenty-five pounds or more. State Park Ranger Supervisor is differentiated from the State Park Ranger Lead in that the State Park Ranger Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level State Park Rangers while the State Park Ranger Lead assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level State Park Rangers.

Requirements

  • Eight years of experience, four years of experience in forest or park management, recreation, or natural resources management, or preparing, developing or delivering programs that interpret natural, historical, cultural or recreational features and an additional four years of experience in park management, recreation or a natural or cultural resources related field.
  • Possession of an appropriate motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Provide the employing agency with a phone number where they can be reached.

  • Experience with work planning, task prioritization, project coordination, or resource scheduling in an operational setting.
  • Experience preparing and managing budgets, procurement, contracting, inventory, or other operational resource management activities.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating staff engaged in operations, maintenance, grounds, facilities or related functions.
  • Experience managing workforce scheduling and resource allocation within an operational environment.
  • Experience handling conflict resolution and employee relations.
  • Experience providing daily animal care, feeding, maintaining habitat cleanliness, monitoring health and behavior, and supporting animal welfare and husbandry practices in an aviary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply Park rules and regulations to ensure voluntary compliance with park standards.
  • Coordinate forest and park programs.
  • Inform visitors of forest and park resources.
  • Supervise lower-level State Park Rangers and may supervise temporary employees and volunteers.
  • Serve as an Area Manager and support the overall operation of state park facilities.
  • Provide site supervision, instruction and problem resolution to full-time administrative, maintenance and programming personnel, as well as seasonal employees and volunteers.
  • Manage visitor services.
  • Oversee general ground, facility and state housing maintenance.
  • Administer grants.
  • Communicate established procedures and policies to the public.
  • Develop budgets and monitor expenses and revenue.
  • Manage interpretive services.
  • Oversee collection and processing of state park and concession revenues.
  • Manage trail design and maintenance.
  • Monitor the physical condition of recreational facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation of the park, as well as the preservation of their natural, cultural and historical resources.
