About The Position

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, is recruiting State Park Ranger II employees for vacancies across the state. This is full-performance work in operating a State park. Rangers provide services directly to visitors; maintain and protect natural and cultural resources, equipment, grounds, facilities, campgrounds and day-use areas; and support the management of natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources for public benefit. Work spans park operations, administration, information, education, interpretation, resource management and visitor services. Facilities may include visitor and nature centers, campgrounds, cabins, picnic shelters, concessions, trails, beaches and swimming areas. Employees interpret and apply park rules and regulations to encourage compliance with park standards, coordinate park programs and inform visitors about park resources. Duties may include customer service, operating facilities, public safety, responding to medical emergencies, administrative work, park maintenance and cash handling. Employees do not supervise permanent employees, but may guide or oversee seasonal, temporary, contractual employees and volunteers. The position receives moderate supervision from a State Park Ranger Supervisor or another designated administrator. Park Rangers serve under the supervision of an Assistant Manager or designee. The work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and requires travel throughout Maryland. Employees may need to work evenings, weekends and holidays and are subject to call-in based on staffing needs. Duties may require lifting 25 pounds or more, wearing protective clothing and equipment, carrying specialized tools, walking over uneven or rocky surfaces, and bending or stooping in confined spaces. Employees assigned duties involving motor vehicle operation must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license and provide the agency with a phone number where they can be reached for call-in.
