About The Position

Baker Tilly is seeking a State & Local Tax Senior Manager with a consulting focus to join their growing State & Local Tax (SALT) practice. The ideal candidate will have experience in income franchise and sales/use tax, or at least sales/use tax consulting experience. This role involves working directly with CFOs, owners, and leaders of middle market and Fortune 500 companies to solve complex state and local tax challenges. The position offers opportunities to expand leadership experience, hone consulting skills in areas such as nexus determinations, taxability analysis, voluntary disclosure, research projects, ruling requests, tax engine configuration and implementation, process review, reverse audits, controversy representation, mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and credits & incentives. The role is principally consulting focused and offers a leadership opportunity to help build a fast-growing, entrepreneurial SALT practice within a firm that values specialty tax practices and invests in employee success.

Requirements

4-year degree required
CPA, Law License Required
Eight (8) + year(s) experience in state and local tax, professional services firm experience required
Ability to lead and supervise others, provide exceptional client service, demonstrate commitment to continuous learning in order to stay current regarding applicable strategies, see the "big picture" as well as the details, display appropriate ethical knowledge and commitment, and exhibit a sense of urgency and commitment to quality and the timely completion of projects.
Eligibility to work in the U.S., without sponsorship, highly preferred

2+ year(s) of supervisory experience, mentoring and counseling associates desired
Candidate ideally has income franchise and sales/use tax experience and if not both, then sales/use tax consulting experience is a must.
Being located near one of our Baker Tilly offices is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Be a trusted advisor to middle market and Fortune 500 clients by providing strategic state and local tax compliance and consulting services that lower their tax rates, ensure they are in compliance and provide value across the spectrum of state and local taxes.
Manage multi-disciplinary, multi-state reviews that analyze income, franchise, sales and use, gross receipts, payroll, and ad valorem, taxes, and other tax types to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, deductions, credits and incentives, and legal entity and operating structures that can reduce the client's tax burdens.
Research state and local tax issues including nexus determinations, taxability analyses, and quantification of potential liabilities.
Counsel clients on state and local tax controversies, including research, drafting client correspondence, prepare ruling requests and providing guidance in defending against state and local tax audits and responses to notices.
Plan and execute tax projects requiring a wide scope of expertise, including due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects.
Prepare technical memoranda on state and local tax issues for individuals as well as a variety of business entities.
Maintain active communication with clients and make recommendations for business and process improvements, manage expectations and enhance value.
Manage a group of staff and seniors on consulting engagements to ensure developmental skills assist with managing client engagement staffing, billings/collections, and ensure client profitability targets are met.
Utilize entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally and externally with clients and the business community.
Invest in professional development individually and through participation in firm-wide – as well as external – learning and development programs and opportunities.
