About The Position

Baker Tilly is seeking a State & Local Tax Manager (Income Franchise) to join their growing State & Local Tax (SALT) practice. The SALT practice consists of over 300 professionals nationwide, offering a comprehensive range of services including Income & Franchise, Sales & Use, Real & Personal Property, and Unclaimed Property. In this role, you will assist clients in leveraging strategic ideas and planning techniques to ensure state and local tax compliance, reduce expenses, improve cash flow, and effectively manage their multistate income and franchise tax obligations. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with CFOs and owners of middle-market clients, as well as SALT leaders of Fortune 500 clients, to address their most complex state and local tax challenges. You will expand your leadership experience and refine your technical and consulting skills as a comprehensive SALT professional, with opportunities in state income and franchise tax compliance and consulting, nexus, sales sourcing, apportionment, tax research, ruling requests, process review, reverse audits, voluntary disclosures, credits & incentives, and other multistate tax matters. The role involves balancing technical consulting with hands-on oversight of state income and franchise tax compliance, including reviewing apportionment and sourcing workpapers and performing initial quality reviews of returns. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required; Masters or advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA, CMI or JD/LLM required.
  • Three (3)+ year(s) experience in state and local tax, professional services firm experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of multistate income and franchise tax concepts, including nexus, state modifications, apportionment, and sourcing methodologies.
  • Experience reviewing the work of associates and/or senior associates and providing coaching and technical guidance.
  • Ability to lead and supervise others, provide exceptional client service, and effectively manage multiple engagements and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning to stay current regarding applicable strategies.
  • Ability to see the "big picture" while maintaining strong attention to detail, display appropriate ethical knowledge and commitment, and exhibit a sense of urgency and commitment to quality and the timely completion of projects.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S., without sponsorship, highly preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with tax compliance software such as CCH Axcess Tax and Thomson Reuters GoSystem Tax RS is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Be a trusted advisor to middle market and Fortune 500 clients by providing strategic state and local tax consulting and compliance services that lower their effective tax rates, ensure compliance, manage risk, and provide value across the spectrum of state and local taxes.
  • Manage state income and franchise tax compliance engagements, including coordinating the preparation and review of multistate returns, estimates, extensions, and related workpapers.
  • Build, review, and analyze state income tax compliance workpapers including apportionment calculations, state-specific modifications, pass-through entity tax calculations, and alternative planning considerations.
  • Perform initial quality reviews of state income and franchise tax returns and related workpapers, identifying technical issues, inconsistencies, filing considerations, and opportunities before finalization.
  • Manage multi-disciplinary, multi-state reviews that analyze income, franchise, sales and use, payroll, ad valorem, and other taxes to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits and incentives and corporate structures that can reduce the client's tax burden.
  • Research state tax issues including nexus determinations, apportionment, taxability analyses, filing requirements, and quantification of potential liabilities.
  • Counsel clients on state and local tax controversies, including performing research, drafting client correspondence, preparing ruling requests, and providing guidance in defending against audits.
  • Plan and execute tax projects requiring a wide scope of expertise, including due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects.
  • Prepare technical memoranda on state and local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and LLCs.
  • Maintain active communication with clients, make recommendations for business and process improvements, manage expectations, and identify opportunities to enhance client value.
  • Assist with managing client engagement staffing, scheduling, billings and collections while helping ensure client profitability targets and engagement deadlines are met.
  • Review the work of associates and senior associates, provide timely technical feedback, and coach team members on state income and franchise tax compliance and consulting matters.
  • Utilize entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally and externally with clients and the community.
  • Invest in professional development individually and through participation in firm wide learning and development programs.
