About The Position

This role is within the State & Local Tax (SALT) practice, which offers a full spectrum of services including income & franchise tax, sales & use tax, real & personal property tax, unclaimed property and voluntary disclosure & remediation. The practice is looking for professionals who want to specialize in a specific area of tax and become experts for their clients. The role involves working directly with CFOs, owners, and leaders from middle market and Fortune 500 companies to solve complex state & local tax challenges. The work is primarily consulting-focused, building skills in areas such as sales tax nexus, research projects, ruling requests, process review, reverse audit, credits & incentives, and property tax. The practice is described as fast-growing, down-to-earth, and collaborative, with a firm investment in employee success and growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in accounting or law, or a related degree in business, with sufficient course work and credits to sit for the CPA and/or Bar exam in the state you are being considered.
  • Outstanding academic performance required, with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of time management, communication, interpersonal skills, relationship building, collaboration, and problem solving.
  • Strong leadership, project management, organizational and analytical skills, initiative, adaptability.
  • Microsoft Suite skills.

Responsibilities

  • Be a trusted advisor to middle market and Fortune 500 clients by providing strategic state and local tax consulting services that lower their tax rates, ensure they are in compliance and provide value across the spectrum of state and local taxes.
  • Research state tax issues including nexus determinations, taxability analyses and quantification of potential liabilities.
  • Respond to notices issued by state and local taxing jurisdictions.
  • Work with multi-state companies to provide guidance on state and local tax controversies, including research and preparing written protests.
  • Assist with due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects.
  • Prepare memoranda on state and local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships and LLCs.
  • Prepare and file state and local sales tax returns for various jurisdictions for multiple clients.
  • Interact and manage multiple clients in a deadline-oriented environment while maintaining exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Analyze large amounts of client data.
  • Maintain internal relationships with colleagues, other service lines and engagement/project teams.
  • Develop and retain technical tax expertise.
  • Proactively identify and communicate issues as they arise.
  • Maintain a positive and “team player” attitude.
  • Become familiar with and adhere to the firm’s policies and procedures.
  • Apply a working knowledge of various computer applications.
