About The Position

Common Ground USA (CG-USA) is dedicated to fostering collaboration across differences to address significant challenges and build an inclusive society. As part of Search for Common Ground, CG-USA focuses on conflict resolution within the United States, believing in the potential for cooperation to solve pervasive problems. Our work is grounded in strengthening peace through safety, social cohesion, institutional legitimacy, personal agency, and resourcing peace. The Resilient States Project specifically convenes diverse leaders in key states to build resilience and mitigate risks of division and political violence. We are seeking a State Lead for Virginia to engage diverse leaders, facilitate programming for political violence mitigation, and collaborate with national and state colleagues. The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with strong relationship-building skills, a commitment to working across differences, adaptability, and a collaborative style.

Requirements

  • Typically BS/BA with a minimum of 11 years of experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a leadership position is highly desired.
  • Deep knowledge of and relationships with civil society and community leaders in Virginia.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with partners, leaders, and constituencies from different backgrounds and viewpoints.
  • Experience in broad-based coalition building is highly desired.
  • A commitment to working across difference to build a more peaceful and just America.

Responsibilities

  • Lead state-level program implementation in Virginia, including coordination and partnership development with diverse leaders.
  • Guide and facilitate the work and engagement of leaders in Resilient States programming, focusing on preventing, defusing, and responding to risks of political violence.
  • Support the delivery of training and tools to state leaders in collaboration with CG-USA colleagues.
  • Serve as the primary representative for CG-USA at the state level, attending events and engaging with high-level contacts.
  • Infuse organizational values into all aspects of work.
  • Develop the state program in coordination and collaboration with the national strategy, advancing CG-USA’s Resilient States strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with headquarters and other state colleagues.
  • Contribute to the overall vision of CG-USA as a senior member of the team.
  • Provide input for strategy development and planning, including new project design and state funding proposals.
  • Contribute to CG-USA Objectives and Key Results (OKR) development.
  • Supervise one or more state-level staff, supporting their development and ensuring adherence to HR policies.
  • Manage and oversee compliance with local federal and state laws, including regulations for 501(c)3 organizations and donor requirements.
  • Oversee internal operational processes for state activities, including monitoring spending and procurement.
  • Ensure safety and security protocols are in place and followed.
  • Ensure program quality, reflection, and learning initiatives in coordination with the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team.
  • Represent CG-USA at events and public engagements.
  • Ensure project reporting is completed according to established timelines and requirements, contributing to grant reports and funder briefings.
  • Monitor internal policy and donor compliance, addressing compliance issues and overseeing risk management guidelines.
  • Review costed work plans and spending, budget realignments, and enforce finance policies and procedures.
  • Ensure subawards are managed according to Search and donor policies, overseeing partnership strategies and selection processes.
  • Address and problem-solve partnership management issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that align with key contributions.
