About The Position

We’re seeking someone to join our State and Local Tax team as a Vice President in New York Tax to work on compliance and reporting functions. The role will report directly into the Head of Morgan Stanley’s State and Local Tax Group. In the Finance division, we act as a partner to business units around the globe by providing management, review, analysis and advisory services of the Firm’s financial and capital resources. This is a Vice President level position within the Tax & Advisory job family which ensures compliance with income and indirect tax filings, reports tax information for the Firm’s regulatory filings, manages the Firm’s global tax authority relationships, including tax controversy, and monitors relevant tax regulations and legislation. Additional responsibilities include managing the Firm’s domestic and international tax strategies, determining the Firm’s transfer pricing policies and advising Senior Management and BUs on business products, strategic transactions and restructuring objectives. Requirements

  • Minimum of 10+ years of SALT related experience
  • Significant ASC 740 experience is a must
  • Strong written, oral, negotiating and presentation skills; demonstrated ability to represent a global organization
  • Strong analytic, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong managerial skills and ability to attract, develop and retain talent
  • Experience covering complex state tax issues in a real-time environment
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborative corporate environment
  • CPA, MS, MBA, JD or LLM required

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of financial service industry and client service experience a plus (Big 4)
  • Corptax experience preferred
  • Financial services industry experience preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with income and indirect tax filings
  • Reports tax information for the Firm’s regulatory filings
  • Manages the Firm’s global tax authority relationships, including tax controversy
  • Monitors relevant tax regulations and legislation
  • Manages the Firm’s domestic and international tax strategies
  • Determines the Firm’s transfer pricing policies
  • Advises Senior Management and BUs on business products, strategic transactions and restructuring objectives
  • Works on state and local tax compliance and reporting functions for a complex financial services organization with a footprint in all major jurisdictions
  • Acts as a subject matter expert with regards to state and local tax compliance and reporting matters
  • Liaises with all members of the Global Tax Department with respect to state and local tax compliance and reporting matters
  • Assists with identifying and incorporating federal, state and local tax law changes into current processes and procedures
  • Develops strong working relationships with internal and external functional partners
  • Works with and manages outside service providers and offshore staff
