Starship Engineer

SpaceX•Starbase, TX, TX

About The Position

As a Starship Engineer, you will develop and qualify processes for high-rate, mixed-product manufacturing of propulsion, avionics, and welded structural assemblies. The role focuses on design for manufacturing, implementing poka-yoke systems, increasing product yield, and automating processes as needed to minimize takt and cycle times.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or another engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of manufacturing and process design experience; internship and academic experience is applicable.
  • Ability to work in tight quarters and demonstrate physical dexterity.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, twist the upper body, work in cramped positions and small openings, and climb hand over hand.
  • Ability to work in extreme outdoor environments, including heat, cold, and rain, and in environments with fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Schedule varies according to site operational needs; flexibility is required.
  • Flexibility to travel to remote build sites, up to 10%.
  • Ability to safely work at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces, use an air-purifying respirator, operate heavy equipment and machinery, and meet the physical requirements of the role.
  • Must meet SpaceX ITAR eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on project experience with mixed-value-stream or high-rate manufacturing lines, focused on maximizing yield and increasing rate.
  • Proficiency in mechanical assembly methods, testing, failure mode and effects analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience integrating and testing propulsion, thermal, electrical, and/or structural systems.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and improving weld processes and weld inspection techniques, including automation.
  • Experience using SQL or other data management structures to inform priorities and measure performance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and perform acceptance testing of manufacturing processes, techniques, and tools to enable efficient, high-rate manufacturing.
  • Design and implement precision tooling to eliminate assembly errors, improve quality, and minimize cycle time.
  • Automate novel processes to ensure repeatability on high-rate manufacturing lines.
  • Work with design engineering teams to influence flight design and vehicle architecture through design-for-manufacturing improvements.
  • Develop and/or automate in-situ inspection techniques to increase yield and decrease cycle time.
  • Manage the transition of parts and assemblies from development to high-rate production.
  • Challenge and simplify requirements to optimize processes and reduce overhead.
