About The Position

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Staff Thermal Analysis Engineer for its Linthicum, Maryland team. The thermal design team supports programs across airborne, ground mobile, stationary ground, and surface-based naval applications, with work ranging from Environmental Control Systems (ECS), EO/IR sensors and radar systems to electronics chassis, CCAs, and chip- and device-level applications. The role supports thermal design on existing and future IRAD and production contracts. The engineer will perform electronics-cooling thermal analysis and lead thermal designs, including requirements derivation, thermal architecture trades, and evaluation of design thermal performance. The position also involves mentoring junior thermal engineers while working within a larger cross-discipline Integrated Product Team, and presenting technical information to internal and external customers and stakeholders. The position is contingent on obtaining or successfully transferring an active U.S. Government Secret clearance. The employee must be able to work onsite daily at the Linthicum, Maryland/Baltimore facility. Travel is 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field with 12 years of experience; master’s degree with 10 years of experience; or Ph.D. with 8 years of experience.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret clearance, or transfer an active Secret clearance.
  • Ability to work onsite daily at the Linthicum, Maryland/Baltimore facility.
  • 10 years of demonstrated experience in electronics-cooling design focused on design by analysis.
  • 10 years of demonstrated ability to propose, win, and deliver government research contracts.

Nice To Haves

  • Active U.S. Government Secret clearance or higher.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, with a concentration in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics.
  • At least 5 years of experience with one or more of ANSYS Icepak, Thermal Desktop, ANSYS Mechanical for thermal analysis, or AEDT.
  • Experience leading thermal design of electronics-cooling hardware to military requirements at the CCA and microelectronics level.
  • Demonstrated history of advising programs and projects on high-level multidisciplinary trade studies from concept through detailed design.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing hardware to meet transient thermal conditions, including energy storage and management.
  • Knowledge of advanced modeling methods, including computational fluid dynamics, to design by analysis, establish experimental setups, and develop analysis methods from experimental results.
  • Knowledge of advanced convective thermal management and designing liquid flow through cold plates for high-heat-flux and high-power-density applications using analytical, high-fidelity, and experimental methods.
  • Extensive thermal design verification testing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electronics-cooling thermal analysis, with subject-matter expertise in at least one thermal management technology: liquid cooling, air cooling, two-phase flow, heat pipes, or refrigeration.
  • Lead thermal designs by owning thermal requirements derivation and thermal architecture trades, and evaluating design thermal performance.
  • Train and mentor junior thermal engineers within a thermal-specific team while working in a larger cross-discipline Integrated Product Team.
  • Provide oral and written presentations to internal and external customers and stakeholders.
  • Propose, win, and deliver on government research contracts.
  • Advise programs and projects on multidisciplinary trade studies from concept through detailed design.
  • Design hardware to meet transient thermal conditions, including energy storage and management.
  • Use advanced modeling methods, including computational fluid dynamics, to design by analysis, establish experimental setups, and develop analysis methods from experimental results.
  • Design advanced convective thermal management and liquid flow through cold plates for high-heat-flux and high-power-density applications using analytical, high-fidelity, and experimental methods.
  • Conduct thermal design verification testing.
