Staff Systems Engineer - Software Systems

Atomic MachinesSanta Clara, CA
$170,000 - $215,000Hybrid

About The Position

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing for the many device classes frustrated by semiconductor methods and to open up entirely new product classes. The Matter Compiler™ technology fully realizes the digital manufacturing dream: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler™ technology – that we will be unveiling to the world soon. As a Staff Software Systems Engineer at Atomic Machines, you will architect and develop the software infrastructure that coordinates precision manufacturing equipment, distributed control systems, and robotic platforms. You will define software system architecture while also implementing critical software components, integration tools, and validation infrastructure. This role combines high-level systems engineering with hands-on software development and testing to ensure robust deployment of complex manufacturing systems.

Requirements

  • First-principles systems mindset.
  • Strong software architecture experience.
  • Extensive Python development experience.
  • Experience with C++, Rust, or Go preferred.
  • Experience with distributed systems and networking.
  • Experience with gRPC, REST APIs, messaging systems, and IPC.
  • Experience integrating software with robotics and industrial hardware.
  • Experience developing automated testing infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and real-time software.
  • Experience with simulation, CI/CD, and software verification.
  • 7+ years building complex software systems.
  • BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of Atomic Machines' distributed platform architecture.
  • Own software system architecture spanning embedded systems, controls, cloud services, and manufacturing applications.
  • Define software interfaces between platform services, robotics, and hardware.
  • Execute software design and implementation for critical infrastructure.
  • Develop APIs, communication protocols, and distributed services.
  • Build automated testing, simulation, and integration tools.
  • Design and execute software validation and system integration testing.
  • Drive software performance analysis, latency analysis, synchronization, and reliability improvements.
  • Lead system debugging across hardware and software boundaries.
  • Define system validation strategies and verification methodologies.
  • Drive FMEA, trade studies, and root cause investigations.
