Staff Systems Design Architect

Stormentum Inc•Austin, TX

About The Position

Stormentum is developing a distributed, modular power electronics conversion platform for data centers and microgrids. The Staff Systems Design Architect works at the system level to translate product requirements into engineering specifications, define subsystem interactions, and partner with hardware and firmware teams on implementation. The role owns key areas of the platform architecture, including how distributed power cells interface with one another, energy storage, data center loads, and the electrical grid, and carries those areas from design through integration, certification, and production. The role spans system requirements, architecture, integration, simulation, safety and performance testing, certification, and manufacturing handoff. It also serves as a technical liaison between product and engineering, translating customer, utility, and regulatory requirements into engineering direction while collaborating across mechanical, firmware, controls, and hardware disciplines throughout the product lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics.
  • At least 5 years of experience in electrical systems design, including at least one full product cycle taking a product from concept to production.
  • Hands-on experience integrating power electronics systems with external interfaces such as the grid, energy storage, servers, microgrids, or distributed energy resources.
  • Experience with high-voltage power conversion systems at 400 V and above, such as grid-tied inverters, energy storage, EV charging, or industrial power equipment.
  • Strong experience building system-level electrical physics models in MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools, and analyzing topologies and component parameters to find optimal solutions to product-level requirements.
  • Breadth across high-voltage, low-voltage, mechanical, thermal, and communications domains.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience contributing to or leading Hazard and Risk Assessments and DFMEA.
  • Experience with data center power hardware, such as 480 VAC three-phase and 800 VDC rack power systems or power shelves, or with modular multilevel converter architectures.
  • Experience with grid-tied inverter systems.
  • Knowledge of grid-forming inverter technologies and advanced grid-support functions.
  • Experience maintaining requirements within tools such as DOORS, Jama, or Polarion.
  • Experience with processes similar to those outlined in UL 1998, UL 991, IEC 62477-1, and IEC 61508.
  • Familiarity with UL 62368-1, UL 1973, NFPA 855, UL 1741 SA/SB, IEEE 1547, and UL 9540.
  • Familiarity with international grid standards including IEC or UL 62368-1.

Responsibilities

  • Define and decompose system-level requirements into hardware, firmware, controls, and integration specifications.
  • Develop and maintain system block diagrams and interface control documents.
  • Define system-level performance and safety test requirements, and support development of automated test equipment.
  • Evaluate and report on architectural trade-offs across high-voltage, low-voltage, mechanical, and communications domains.
  • Drive and contribute to Hazard and Risk Assessments and support DFMEA, PFMEA, and safety test processes.
  • Develop the system integration architecture connecting the platform with energy storage, generators, data center and microgrid loads, and the electrical grid.
  • Run system-level simulations to evaluate design options and guide engineering decisions.
  • Support third-party integrations and product certification, including UL and applicable grid codes.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between product and engineering, translating customer, utility, and regulatory requirements into engineering direction.
  • Contribute to system-level design reviews and risk assessments across subsystems.
  • Support the handoff from design through manufacturing and ensure designs are optimized for production.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, firmware, controls, and hardware teams across the product lifecycle.
