About The Position

GitHub is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Git Systems Engineering team within its Platform and Infrastructure organization. This role focuses on cross-team improvements to that platform, including the design, rollout, and support of highly performant, scalable, and available services for the next generation of AI-driven software development. The team is highly distributed and works asynchronously. The successful candidate will communicate effectively in writing and build working relationships with colleagues around the globe. The role involves technical leadership, mentoring, collaboration with engineering and product partners, and rotational on-call support for live services.

Requirements

  • At least 9 years of experience in software engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline, with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python; or equivalent qualifying education and experience.
  • Alternatively, an associate degree in a listed or related field and at least 8 years of relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field and at least 7 years; a master’s degree in a listed or related field and at least 5 years; or a doctorate in a listed or related field and at least 3 years.
  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to build working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly distributed, asynchronous environment.

  • Understanding of production system monitoring and observability.
  • Ability to think critically about system design and software engineering concepts and apply them pragmatically to project needs.
  • Demonstrated experience with large-scale system architecture and design, particularly in cloud-based environments, and a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
  • Experience working closely with product management, design, and other engineering teams to drive cross-functional projects and deliver high-quality products.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services; build deep familiarity with owned systems and write maintainable code.
  • Document architectural designs and proposals, run targeted experiments, and validate approaches with prototypes.
  • Lead by example and mentor others in producing extensible, maintainable code used across products and integrated with downstream dependencies.
  • Provide technical leadership through code reviews, uphold quality standards, and design for high availability and GitHub-scale performance.
  • Coordinate with engineering and product owners to define, prioritize, and deliver projects that meet business goals.
  • Maintain live services through rotational on-call work and implement or support solutions and mitigations for complex issues affecting Live Site service performance or functionality.
  • Cultivate an environment where team members feel empowered and demonstrate ownership and belonging.
