(USA) Staff, Software Engineer

Walmart•Bentonville, AR

About The Position

The Staff, Software Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor responsible for designing, building, and operating Walmart’s core transportation platform. The role combines technical leadership with software delivery: writing production code, guiding architectural decisions, and owning complex initiatives from design through deployment. The position calls for a versatile backend engineer experienced with distributed systems, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and modern web applications. The team builds and operates a cloud-native transportation platform supporting Walmart’s global supply chain by connecting suppliers, carriers, and internal operations. Its solutions manage the freight lifecycle—from planning and execution through tracking, settlement, and carrier experience—for private fleet and third-party transportation. The team uses AI-native engineering and intelligent automation to accelerate software delivery and simplify logistics workflows, while focusing on resilient, scalable platforms that improve transportation efficiency, reduce operating costs, and support omnichannel growth. The engineer delivers platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and ML frameworks; leads software development lifecycle activities; applies cloud-native architecture; and builds AI-driven applications. The role also includes design reviews, mentoring engineers, influencing technical decisions, collaborating with stakeholders, and continually improving processes, tools, and products. Walmart describes its engineering culture as using agentic coding tools while maintaining standards for quality, security, scalability, and maintainability.
