About The Position

Walmart is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks. This role involves driving the full software lifecycle, applying cloud-native architecture principles, and ensuring technical excellence through design reviews and mentorship. The successful candidate will collaborate across teams to translate complex requirements into actionable solutions, promote engineering best practices, and continuously improve processes and products. The team partners with Global Governance units to design and deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance web applications and APIs. They develop resilient microservices using Java Spring Boot and Python, leveraging containerized deployments with Docker and Kubernetes. Committed to software quality, the team conducts thorough code reviews and testing while addressing technical challenges efficiently. Emphasizing iterative delivery and technical excellence, they foster innovation and collaboration to achieve business and platform objectives. Their focus on reliability, performance, and best engineering practices ensures robust, maintainable solutions aligned with organizational goals.

Requirements

  • 10–14 years of experience in software development using modern languages, with deep expertise in Java and its core principles.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Spring Boot and Spring MVC for building production-grade REST APIs and microservices at scale.
  • Proven hands-on experience architecting and implementing Apache Kafka event-streaming solutions for high-throughput, real-time data processing.
  • Strong working experience with GCP services and cloud-native patterns, including compute, storage, and managed data services.
  • Hands-on experience with Big Query for large-scale data warehousing, complex SQL analytics, and ML feature pipelines.
  • Demonstrated expertise building data engineering pipelines using PySpark and orchestrating workflows with Apache Airflow.
  • Experience designing, building, and deploying AI agents and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers for intelligent automation and LLM-integrated workflows.
  • 10+ years of experience building complex distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Java, SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed caching, and container technologies (Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Strong ownership of code quality — extensive unit test coverage, code reviews, and CI/CD best practices.
  • Familiarity with modern front-end build pipelines and tools.
  • Strong experience with performance profiling tools and techniques to identify bottlenecks in code and system components.
  • Proven ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and frameworks quickly.
  • Ability to deliver in Agile methodology (SCRUM).
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical lead to design, develop, and deliver multiple business- or technology-driven projects with small to medium-sized teams, supporting new functionalities and user experiences.
  • Play a pivotal role in shaping architectural decisions, championing scalable, secure, and efficient solutions to meet current and future needs.
  • Design and build robust RESTful APIs and microservices using Java and Spring Boot, ensuring high performance, maintainability, and developer ergonomics.
  • Architect and implement real-time data engineering pipelines leveraging Apache Kafka, PySpark, and Apache Airflow for end-to-end streaming and batch data workflows.
  • Lead cloud-native development on GCP, utilizing Big Query for large-scale data warehousing, analytics, and ML feature engineering.
  • Design data and feature pipelines that power intelligent, data-driven product experiences.
  • Build, deploy, and operate AI agent frameworks and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, enabling scalable agentic automation across engineering and business workflows.
  • Guide software engineers in building and delivering secure REST services using Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Kafka, Kubernetes, Maven, and cloud technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners including Product, Business, and Operations to understand requirements and deliver high-quality software products.
  • Drive proof-of-concepts and validate ideas through prototypes leveraging emerging AI and data technologies.
  • Run A/B experiments, measuring impact on quality and business metrics.
  • Mentor engineers and foster a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Own production reliability — observability, on-call rotations, and root cause analyses (RCAs).
  • Build AI-driven applications integrating ML components and intelligent automation features.
  • Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable, cloud-native infrastructure and reusable tooling supporting AI/ML frameworks.
  • Drive the full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and real-time data processing.
  • Architect intelligent software systems integrating AI agents and advanced model-driven design techniques.
