Position Summary: The Staff Software Engineer in FinTech combines deep technical ownership with systems thinking to build Pax8's next-generation Revenue Lifecycle Management platform. This platform provides the financial infrastructure behind our global marketplace, supporting how technology is bought, sold, billed, settled, and managed. As Pax8 evolves toward a managed intelligence marketplace, this role also helps build the commerce foundations for the AI economy. You will develop capabilities that support subscription and usage-based consumption models, including token consumption and emerging AI-driven transactions, with the accuracy, reliability, auditability, and scale required of financial infrastructure. Our FinTech group spans Product Information Management (PIM); Configure, Pricing, Quote (CPQ); Order to Cash (O2C); Fulfillment, Entitlement, and Metering (FEM); Foreign Exchange (FX). We are looking for engineers with meaningful experience across two or three of these areas, with relevant backgrounds that may include payments, subscriptions, revenue recognition, and financial reconciliation. This role combines that domain experience with a Frontier engineering profile: an AI-native, hands-on builder who uses spec-driven development and agents to increase engineering productivity while retaining accountability for architecture, code quality, validation, and production outcomes. The Staff Software Engineer is individually accountable for building, hardening, and operating a system that other teams and business functions depend on. They hold the problem space long enough to develop deep expertise and innovate within it. They earn the right to set its direction by shipping and running the system. This role is measured on five dimensions: Craftsmanship, Impact, Mentorship, Safety, and State of the Art. At staff level, judgment, systems thinking, and safety must support consequential decisions in systems with broad financial and organizational reach. This role is measured on five dimensions (Craftsmanship, Impact, Mentorship, Safety, and State of the Art). What separates it from Software Engineer is that Judgment, Systems Thinking, and Safety now have to hold up against a problem where being wrong is expensive and, often, no one else is positioned to catch it.

Requirements

  • Meaningful hands-on experience building and operating production systems across two or three of the following areas: Product Information Management (PIM), Configure, Pricing, Quote (CPQ), Order to Cash (O2C), Fulfillment, Entitlement, and Metering (FEM), Foreign Exchange (FX), Reconciliation and Settlement.
  • Relevant experience may include payments, subscriptions, revenue recognition, and financial reconciliation.
  • Experience with subscription lifecycle management, usage-based consumption, pricing structures, and billing operations within your areas of expertise.
  • Ability to implement financial controls and auditable workflows in partnership with Finance and Compliance.
  • Ability to translate domain rules into explicit specifications and testable system behavior, including failure scenarios and financial edge cases.
  • Understanding of how upstream changes affect downstream financial records, customer access, and operational workflows.
  • Building: Builds and operates a system that is hard enough to need its own technical strategy and technically deep in its own right, and helps drive the technical specs for it. Builds the tool that eliminates a repeated problem.
  • Judgment: Makes high-stakes calls on what to build, scale, or kill when the data runs out, and escalates the ones that belong to product
  • Writing: Documents at a level that sustains other teams consuming the system without a standing meeting, and presents technical direction to engineering and product audiences
  • Outcomes: Instruments the system and proves delivered value against a falsifiable, data-backed standard
  • Systems Thinking: Lands fixes across ownership boundaries when the end-to-end view demands it, regardless of who owns the code
  • Mentorship: Grows another engineer's judgment
  • Safety: Applies a categorically higher bar to irreversible-consequence risk on a system with organization-wide reach
  • State of the Art: Owns the pipeline for adopting new techniques in the problem space
  • Understand AI capabilities and limitations and apply that judgment in daily engineering decisions
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools (Claude) as primary productivity accelerators across the full development lifecycle
  • Apply Pax8 data classification and privacy principles before sharing any data with AI systems
  • Practice responsible AI: recognize and mitigate bias, uphold fairness and transparency requirements
  • Advanced prompting proficiency: multi-turn context setting, chain-of-thought elicitation, structured output enforcement, and iterative refinement
  • Build and own eval and validation infrastructure for AI-assisted or AI-native systems within your problem space, the layer that determines whether output is correct rather than merely plausible
  • Apply elevated scrutiny to agent-produced code within a highly complex system
  • Track state-of-the-art techniques and AI-specific vulnerability classes as they evolve, and be the one who notices when either changes and the one who ships the response into production
  • Must hold valid right to work in United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Track record of being the de facto owner of a problem space that most of the organization depends on, earned by building and running it rather than by advising on it
  • Experience mentoring other Software Engineers toward owning highly complex systems
  • Experience taking a technique from a paper or external source through prototype and proof of concept into a hardened, safety-reviewed production rollout

Responsibilities

  • Own, build, and operate a technically complex FinTech system that requires its own technical strategy. Drive precise specifications, architecture, implementation, and production operation.
  • Apply domain expertise across relevant revenue lifecycle areas, understanding how product information, pricing, orders, subscriptions, fulfillment, usage, and financial transactions affect one another.
  • Build commerce capabilities for subscription and usage-based models, including metering, token consumption, billing, and settlement, in partnership with Product.
  • Make consequential calls about what to build, scale, or retire on ambiguous problems. Drive them to clarity through iteration and collaboration, and own the outcome.
  • Exercise systems thinking beyond your ownership boundary. Optimize the revenue lifecycle end to end, adjust plans when a local improvement creates downstream problems, and pursue the right fix through influence, contribution, or escalation.
  • Own your domain: identify high-impact problems, scope solutions, and build them using AI agents and enterprise-approved tools across the development lifecycle.
  • Use spec-driven development to make business rules, system behavior, edge cases, and acceptance criteria explicit enough to guide both engineers and agents.
  • Design for financial correctness, data integrity, auditability, and resilient operation across interconnected systems.
  • Instrument systems for adoption, usage, reliability, and financial accuracy from the start. Prove delivered value against a falsifiable, data-backed standard.
  • Partner with Product, Finance, Compliance, Operations, Commercial, and engineering teams to translate financial and commercial requirements into reliable software, escalating business policy decisions to the appropriate owners.
  • Implement financial controls and traceability that support auditability, revenue recognition, taxation, and applicable compliance requirements in collaboration with domain experts.
  • Build platform capabilities that enable trusted, intuitive financial experiences for partners and internal stakeholders.
  • Mentor engineers toward owning complex systems and strengthen their judgment about architecture, domain tradeoffs, validation, and production risk.
  • Apply a high bar to safety, security, and irreversible consequences. Identify and address financial errors, data loss, security vulnerabilities, and AI-specific risks before release, including deciding when a system is not ready to ship.
  • Run the full lifecycle for adopting new techniques: discovery, spike, prototype, proof of concept, and hardened production rollout.
  • Write documentation precise enough for other teams to consume your systems without a standing coordination meeting.
