About The Position

We’re looking for a staff engineer to help lead the pricing and payments team. The pricing and payments team works on helping The RealReal get as much inventory as possible as quickly as possible. We have to work on all parts of the stack technology-wise but also touch every part of TRR’s processes. We have to solve unique challenges daily to support new vendors and taxons with depth in sku. We work with ruby on rails and elixir on the backend and mostly with react/nextjs on the frontend.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Significant expertise in Ruby on Rails within a production environment.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL and database schema design.
• Mastery of modern debugging patterns and system observability.
• Strong competency in frontend JavaScript (React/Next.js).
• Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex, cross-system bottlenecks.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka for event-driven architectures.

Nice To Haves

• Professional experience with functional programming (specifically Elixir).
• History of Open Source contributions or community involvement.
• Deep technical expertise in Ruby and the Rails framework.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and development of software solutions, making strategic decisions that influence our technical direction.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to align technology development with business objectives, effectively communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Perform rigorous code reviews and advocate for best coding practices to ensure our products are efficient and maintainable.
• Provide guidance and support to junior engineers, fostering their professional growth and contributing to a culture of excellence.
• Research emerging technologies and trends in software engineering, identifying opportunities to enhance our projects and processes.
• Address complex technical challenges with innovative solutions, anticipating potential issues to ensure smooth project execution.
